The "big thing" that is going to be missing next year is Adam Woodbury. He is not going to fill the stats page, but you need the guys to do the dirty work that makes the others around look good from blocks to steals.
What he is doing on defense shows a lot of athleticism and most of all heart. Stay with me a minute while I explain the role that Woodbury performs and how it is going to be missed next year. If you look at the shot clock countdown based on the way Iowa plays defense and the role that Woodbury plays is going to be hard to replace.
First 6-8 seconds are getting the ball (as Iowa puts token to hard pressure to slow their progression) across the timeline leaving on average 22-24 seconds remaining
The next 5 seconds the team is getting their offensive set organized leaving 18-19 seconds remaining
The third 2-3 seconds the teams starts running the play which normally starts with a High Post Pick on the PG
This is where Woodbury comes into play with the Hedge on the PG dribble which takes another 3-4 seconds which as the PG has to back out to 26 to 28 feet from the basket and now they are down to 10-12 seconds and haven't gotten inside the 3 PT line. Teams that aren't into their set at 10 seconds is disruptive and leads to a wild shot.
After that Woody busts back to his man and position and the other team is now in a scramble mode. But what else Woody does is still playing defense, denying the ball and finally getting position for rebounds. His post defense is strong and he clogs a lot of real estate. No easy shots from the block. In my opinion, Woodbury is a big reason why Iowa's defensive efficiency is so high.
We only have 6 regular seasons game left to enjoy what Adam is; which is a big guy averaging close to 10 RBs/9 PTs, outrunning his man down the floor, clogging the middle on D which allows others to move more freely because of the exceptionally job on the back line for a Top 5 Team and a TEAM LEADER.
No Woodbury = No Top 5 Rating
