Texas on Thursday

We should learn quite a bit about this group. Should be an excellent early
season match-up.........and it benefits Wounded warriors.

Talk amongst yourselves.......

Chances of beating Texas > chances of beating Wisconsin.

Before the year started I thought Iowa had a 10-20% chance of beating TX, now I think it's closer to 40%

Yeah, I would flip the odds of the hoops team beating TX, and the football team beating Wisconsin:

Iowa vs. Wisconsin - 20%
Iowa vs. Texas - 35/40%

I'm also not that wrapped up in TX's lofty pre-season ranking. Teams can be overrated/underrated this time of year. Let's see where everyone is in February.

It could come down to teamplay and how well each team plays together. We have a team that looks for the pass first, in most cases and we get down the court quickly. Sometimes the lesser teams are like a left-handed prizefighter. Last season we seemed to handle the good teams early and had them most of the game, until the fail at the end. I do believe we have learned from that experience. Our D does seem to be, at this very early stage, very good. There were times in the second half, in the half court D, playing man to man that they simply couldn't get a good shot or pass. We even tried the full court press twice in a row and it worked very well. NDS was totally unprepared. We haven't used the full court press very much up to now during Fran's reign.....

I personally believe we will play with Texas in a close game.....

However I do admit that they sound like a beastly team, not unlike MSU most years. We should be able to play with them. I certainly do not want to see a total beatdown like the game at Lansing where Fran totally destroyed a chair.....

That scene plays in an unending loop in my mind all the time, waiting in line at HyVee, simply everywhere.....

Real interested to see what the rotation looks like against Texas. I'm not a fan of how Fran tends to play the starters together and then the second five together during games against weaker competition. Would like to see how we look with some of the reserves mixed in with the starters. I would be a little surprised if Uhl gets more than a couple minutes on Thursday. I think we go with the 9 man rotation, hopefully White and Uthoff at 32+ minutes. Fran probably has 7 guys that he totally trusts right now, with Jok and Dickerson still needing to earn that.

Is it bad that I want to cancel my 5th grade son's basketball practice so I can watch the whole thing live? I won't do it, I'll just DVR and suffer, but I want to.

I love the early test Texas brings as well as the rest of the field out in New York. This is going to be a great learning experience for Iowa and a true test of where they stand right now in terms of NCAA tourney teams.

Not often such great preseason test are on Iowa's schedule -- not only TX but Cal / Cuze on Friday. Bummer, it sounds like many of you have conflicts that might prevent you from seeing part / all of the the game. Not me, this is must see bball to see where Hawks stack up ...

so I've got tix for both sessions, all 4 games, flying out tomorrow, Suckahz!!

I wanna get excited, I really do but it's about like our football matchup with Wisconsin.

Why should I believe we will compete when all evidence points to being out matched.

I don't think we've looked out matched on the court since the NIT championship.

BryceC - I think you had a pretty spot on analysis. My confidence in this game is up after watching Iowa's 2 games and Texas vs Alcorn St. It was more of Iowa looking better than expected than anything Texas did wrong.

Iowa's keys to the game:
1. 3pt % - Iowa has to be able to hit 3's. Second chance points are not going to be as easy against a bigger team like Texas. Also, going to be a challenge for Woody and Gabe in the post if Iowa can't stretch the floor.

2. Fast Break Points (tempo) - Texas plays a slower tempo, I think Iowa needs to push the ball and score easy fast break points. If Iowa can push it, this will be a big advantage.

3. Defensive Rebounding - Have to keep Texas off the offensive boards, end of story.

I agree with all of your keys to the game. I would add a fourth key, which is equally vital with respect to beating Texas. That is the Hawks HAVE to limit turnovers.

My guess is that the bench will be substantially shortened against teams like Texas, MSU, ISU, etc. Jok and Uhl have been far too prone to coughing up the ball to give them any serious minutes until they can demonstrate the ability to maintain control of the ball. If Iowa can keep turnovers down to a number like 10 to 12, then I would think they would have a decent chance of winning the game.

Go Hawks!

Looking forward to see how we match up against Texas. I like playing games like this in the non conference. I really think it helps you get better in the long run. I have always respected Izzo for (normally) playing a very tough non-conference schedule.

The lessons learned from the Texas game will be invaluable as the season progresses.

Dear Hawkeye Nation,
Settling into my short time here in the BigApple ... in style ;-)
Doin' some recon on Quinn's - home of the midtown Manhatten Hawkeye Huddle & regular NYC gamewatch. Haven't run across any Hawk fans, yet (except the Mrs. SB) but did see this gem ... guess every city is part of Hawkeye Nation.
(My apologies, Hawkeye Nation. Despite my awesome intellect, I am a child of the pre-tech age and cant get my smart phone to allow me to post the great pic I took.
They say a pic is worth 1000 words; let me use <1000 to describe it ... Herky (old school, tough Herky, not new age metrosexual Herky) is climbing Empire State Bldg, like KingKong.

Anyway, fellow posters. Trust me when I say, u wish u were me(even more qthan usual). Until my next update ...

Live, from New York! It's ...
