Texas on Thursday

We should learn quite a bit about this group. Should be an excellent early
season match-up.........and it benefits Wounded warriors.

Talk amongst yourselves.......

I can't wait. There is a lot of opportunity in front of both the Iowa football and basketball programs. I'm pumped up for an exciting weekend starting with Thursday night.

Agreed.....Hawks win and it could be a mini catapult...Hawks play hard and drop one, won't hurt them one iota at the end of the season cause its against a highly ranked team.

I think this is a great test for Iowa. I'm not sure if they can beat Texas, but I do think they need a good showing, and they need to play tough to gain confidence for the year.

These early season tests bode well down the road and down the stretch when the B1G starts....win or lose, Iowa will learn a lot about itself against Texas....

Iowa most certainly can beat Texas. Holmes and Taylor are the guys we must control and if they do that it should set up to be a great ballgame. Taylor will be great test for our guards, IMO stopping or limiting him is key.

Yes, TX is loaded with talent, that's why they're highly ranked. It's college ball, experienced over youth, I think IA has more experience than TX. I like IA's chances to prove something, esp Whitey and Clemmons, both will play with a chip on their shoulders, only if Uthoff and Jok show up. Gabe and Woody will be our consistent two-headed monster.

With UT's big front line, it seems pretty critical for Woodbury and Olaseni to stay out of foul trouble.

I am really looking forward to this game as an ISU fan to get a gauge on both teams. I saw Texas play several times last year but have not seen them so far this year. They do return their entire starting five however so here are my initial thoughts on this game:

Taylor is the engine that drives that team. I don't think they are a particularly good offensive team and I think they will struggle there again this year. They aren't a great shooting team. I do think they are a little overrated.

Taylor absolutely eviscerated ISU down in Austin. One of the more frustrating games last season and he continually hit ridiculous floaters. If he has that going it will be tough for Iowa to win. I do think Iowa has the height to compete well in this game though, the Uthoff/White/Woody frontline I think is enough to cause UT problems. I do want to say I am always surprised at how athletic Ridley is. Just a great athlete in that body and I think he can also hurt Iowa.

I am very curious to see how Iowa does on offense. I think they have the bodies where they can check Iowa and I don't think they'll have to double team. That could create some problems especially because of their girth if the officials allow contact it could be hard for Iowa's guys to get penetration. 3 point shooting will be really important IMO.

Anyway just looking forward to this one and really thankful basketball is back and we're having some good matchups already.

Edit: I've seen people talk about UT's experience... IMO they are plenty experienced and have just as much experience as Iowa.

means they'll shoot like 12 of 15 from 3, 21/22 FTs and about 60% from the field vs Hawks. That's just the way it works lol

Last year we say White kind of disappear during big games. I like this early on match up to see if he is ready to take that next step as a player.

I am really excited about this game I want to see what this team can do. They are going to need to clean up some of that sloppy passing from the bench players.

Odds of winning this weekend:

Iowa vs Cal.....60
Iowa vs Wisky.. 35%
Iowa vs Texas....20%.

Chances of beating Texas > chances of beating Wisconsin.

Before the year started I thought Iowa had a 10-20% chance of beating TX, now I think it's closer to 40%

BryceC - I think you had a pretty spot on analysis. My confidence in this game is up after watching Iowa's 2 games and Texas vs Alcorn St. It was more of Iowa looking better than expected than anything Texas did wrong.

Iowa's keys to the game:
1. 3pt % - Iowa has to be able to hit 3's. Second chance points are not going to be as easy against a bigger team like Texas. Also, going to be a challenge for Woody and Gabe in the post if Iowa can't stretch the floor.

2. Fast Break Points (tempo) - Texas plays a slower tempo, I think Iowa needs to push the ball and score easy fast break points. If Iowa can push it, this will be a big advantage.

3. Defensive Rebounding - Have to keep Texas off the offensive boards, end of story.

Iowa also needs to keep up their hot FT shooting from their last game. Meanwhile, Texas needs to continue to struggle a litte with FTs -- they are currently hitting less than 70% from the line.

Fran needs stay calm and not to give away free points. Who knows ?... If we keep it close or score more points at the end of game.
We'll know for sure what kind of team we have and I fully support hawkeyes whether we win or not.
