Template for handling Iowa's BB team

Good list Seth. (could you make your font bigger next time I couldn't see it :D.) Your list looks exactly like what Beilein designed to slow us down and stymie our offense. So when other teams scout Iowa they will see what they need to do to shut us down. So let's see your list of how Iowa should counter when teams come at us like this in order to get our offense and fastbreak scoring juggernaut going.

And Uthoff was lost, intimidated, overwhelmed...on offense. The in game rotation changes from game to game and this was a game where Olaseni and Uthoff were not contributing. It happens.

I agree and it did look like we got tired legs the last 5-10 minutes. I think we have to find ways to help guys like Uthoff get going, but if a guys cold and he keeps throwing up bricks and getting snuffed you look up and were down 10 which is what happened last night. At least AW got himself going.

I'm really starting to think that Michigan has as good a shot as any to win the BIG. I thought in the non con that they were overrated, but have changed my mind. They have length, great guard play, and are athletic. This isn't cause they beat Iowa, it is because they just looked like the better Iowa. They looked like the better team at Wisconsin as well. I think they are for real.

Since I said this, they will probably lose 3 in a row now.

My take:
-Bellein devised a game plan that was executed masterfully. They held us to zero fast break points until midway through the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] half, and forced us into long possessions. Imagine if no one played us this way until the ncaa tourney – we’d be out in a heartbeat.

-Marble and Uthoff played their worst games of the season, the bench scored 8 points, we shot 2-10 from 3, and the substitution patterns were awful. And yet, we were right there with the chance to steal the game with a few min left.

-Having a target on our back is going to be such an advantage for us. Getting teams best gameplans, execution, crowd level, etc. will only make us better. See: Kansas

-Basabe said after the game that he ran out of energy. I truly believe we were one more contributer away from winning that game.

-Steve Deace needs to stick to football analysis – Michigan will lose by 10-15 in IC in a couple weeks.

it also seemed like Michigan had fresher legs in the last 10 minutes. White, Basabe, and Marble appeared to be quite fatigued late in game. Even though Aaron got it going on offense, he got beat on the defensive end too many times.

There was some fatigue, but White was also tasked with guarding Stauskas for most of the game. White isn't a great on-ball defender, anyway (he's much better when he's jumping passing lanes), and Stauskas might just be the best player in the conference. He's been breaking guys down off the dribble all year, and he turned White into the ground on a couple different crossovers in the first half. I think White's defensive miscues/breakdowns were less about him being tired and more about Stauskas just being that good.

Stop Iowa in transition, control the rebounds, and limit the three point attempts and you'll beat them 8 out of 10 times.

Who won't you beat 8 out of 10 times doing all of those things?
Teams that don't run and gun. Iowa is the 3rd fastest team in the nation in terms of possession time. I like the style, but they aren't good when you force them to slow it down.

I'm right there with you. Stauskas has shown me a lot more than I ever expected from him. I'm struggling to find a good comparison for him, but he's about as complete a player as you'll find in college basketball (at least offensively). And the Morgan/Horton combo has done a surprisingly good job filling in for McGary inside. Robinson has also been more consistent; he's averaging 15.6 ppg on 57% shooting since the loss to Duke. Consistency has been his problem ever since arriving on campus; the talent oozes out of him. Now he looks like he's starting to figure things out.

We're okay when you force us to slow down. But Michigan forced us into near-Wisconsin level slow. We couldn't find a way to penetrate the defense (particularly in the second half) and spent a lot of time passing the ball back and forth up top because we couldn't find an opening. Few defenses we'll see do that.

that's not what you said though.

I don't care what team you're talking about, if you don't allow them transition points, don't allow them many shots from 3, and you don't allow them second chance points they aren't going to have a good offensive night.

I was shocked that White drew Stauskas. It was a bad, bad matchup for white. He doesn't have the lateral quickness to stop him from driving to the hop, and he isn't an in your shorts off ball defender. I really didn't understand that one, I thought Marble should have been on him more. Maybe we just figured he is gonna get his, shut down the others??

Stauskas ties career high. GRIII takes the ball to the hoop at will. Kinda seemed like we lacked a defensive gameplan.

That's what I figured. Marble was the best athletic matchup for both Stauskas and Robinson, but he obviously can't guard both guys.

I disagree. We saw a very passive offensive Iowa Team lastnight on the road in Michigan. Iowa flat out played like pansies.. When Fran pulls the tape he is going to unleash the wrath on himself and the players..

Michigan beat the Hawks by beating them in the transition game. Go back and count how many times their bigs were sprinting back for an easy bucket or mismatch. Every time Marble or White or anyone else hit the floor while driving and trying to draw a foul, the Wolves made them pay in transition.
