Template for handling Iowa's BB team

What we saw tonight is the template for handling Iowa's BB team.

#1--limit fast break points, #2--limit/win points off turnovers, and #3--control Devyn Marble.

Michigan did this to a "T" tonight....4 fast break points for Iowa, +7 in turnover points, and while he got #13 points, Marble had the clamps put on him all night.

Not many teams have the personnel to do this to Iowa. Mich does and did.

Seth53, I think you nailed it. As proof, just remember that EVERY other loss, Iowa still dominated play early and probably should have won those games. This is the first game where you sensed the Hawks were not the better team.

And I would have to agree with those who said we got out-coached tonight. For us to have such a size advantage, and then abandon our "pound it in" strategy after halftime is curious.

But the bottom-line is, strategy or not, Michigan came ready to play and Iowa, for whatever reason, did not. Our focus seemed off, our timing seemed off, and our execution certainly did.

Another game Saturday - and we had better be ready to play in Evanston.

Iowa came in ready to play, that first half our inside game was great but they gave up some dumb offensive rebounds. Basabe and Woodbury were scoring easily and Michigan did not have the answer. For some reason the got away from that in the second half send the perimeter game never got going, only 10 threes were launched Gesell and Oglesby shot 1 between them. When Iowa loses that balanced scoring then it makes then 1 dimensional, just drive yo the hoop and hope for the foul.

I give Michigan credit, they defended Iowa well but when that offense is clicking no one can stop it.

or, quite simply, the template could be 1) be a top 20 team 2) play Iowa at home 3) pray you can hang on

calm down people

ok, calm......fooooosaba.....fooooooooooooosaba

I am calm now, thanks for being our anger management coach. Now is it ok with you if we discuss the loss rationally? Would you be ok with that?

So much for depth on the bench....Michigan played with essentially 6 guys.

Meanwhile, no Jok, very little Uthoff, Gabe and Clemmons.

We had Michigan at a time our depth could have beat them and we didn't use it. Oh well...

Did you notice how poorly Olaseni and Uthoff played when they were in the game? That had to be one of the worst games I have watched Olaseni and Uthoff play defensively all season. They were both constantly out of position and it lead to some easy points for Michigan.

He has a point though. We get to find out later in the year if it is a home court thing, but I fully expect to beat Michigan and Wisconsin at home. I said before the year began that we would go 1-3 AT (Mich. St., Michigan, Wisconsin, and OSU). It is looking like this is how it will play out. If we go 2-2, that would be AWESOME!

The good thing about depth is you can use it when it is performing.....if the starters are playing heads and shoulders better though, you keep them in. The bench wasn't very effective, so no point continuing to put those guys in the game.

Sure, looking at this game from generalized point of view this is a game Iowa probably should lose. FWIW I never had Iowa winning this game either. But I don't see many people freaking out over this loss, in any thread. This is a simple discussion based on what we saw, digging a little deeper on what happened during the game. This is not turning into the football board where we fire the coach, freak out over the recruiting, ect ect.

it also seemed like Michigan had fresher legs in the last 10 minutes. White, Basabe, and Marble appeared to be quite fatigued late in game. Even though Aaron got it going on offense, he got beat on the defensive end too many times.

Agreed, about the freak out. I avoided HN last night after getting back from watching the game at a bar, as I assumed people would be freaking out. I am happy to say, I haven't seen that here, so that is good, as that loss isn't worth freaking out over.

Analyzing yes, freaking out no

Very good point, Fran cut down his bench minutes a lot yesterday. The starters played 148 of the 200 minutes, even Woodbury had 22 minutes. When you have guys like Uthoff (9 minutes), Clemmons (5 minutes), and Olaseni (7 minutes) not playing well then that puts more pressure on the rest of the rotation. McCabe and Oglesby got most of the minutes off the bench and neither was doing much of anything offensively.

And Uthoff was lost, intimidated, overwhelmed...on offense. The in game rotation changes from game to game and this was a game where Olaseni and Uthoff were not contributing. It happens.

Stauskas and Robinson outscored White and Marble by 10. We lost by 8. I thought our 2 guys could cancel their 2 guys and they didn't last night. The rest of our team outscored the rest of their team by 2. We'll get them in the rematch.

I dont know if that a "template". Could say scoring more points than Iowa is a template. Iowa did more to beat Iowa than Michigan did to beat Iowa.

Mentally Iowa had its worst game of the year. It happens. Even with that they still had a chance to win on the road to a top 25 team.

Basabe was solid in the first half and really fun to watch.

Also, considering Mich was without their starting center, and according to reports, their starting PG was really ill, hats off to the wolves on a well played game.

And yes, I do believe we'll beat them @ CHA.

Agree with this toally. I never got the sense Iowa could run the wolves out of the stadium (aka Minnesota)

I'll be in section 110, 3rd row in Evanstson on Saturday. Go Hawks.
