Taste of Coaching w/ Seth Davis

Did anyone happen to catch this show after the game? If not, there are multiple showings upcoming on BTN.

Fran told Lon Kruger (inventor of the 5th yr transfer) that the rule had to go. He also had some very direct views on the current state of transfers.
It was interesting to see Fran discuss the state of college basketball with some of his peers.

His team absolutely destroyed Texas in Texas last night.....Lon is a darn good coach.....

I caught a little of it, but not to really offer an opinion...

This is the 3rd thread on it. But yes, it was interesting and well done. I'd recommend it as well.

The way that I took the quote from Fran was more of a jab at Fred than at Lon. He also went on to say that Lon's son taking advantage of it was a completely different situation, i.e. new coach, playing for dad, etc...

True, it almost seemed like he didn't know Lon was the first to do it. He pointed out that he didn't have a problem with Lon taking advantage of the rule, but didn't back off how he felt about the rule in general.

One thing I learned, don't get Fran started on a tampering discussion!

It was pretty obvious who he was talking about. I'm surprised he didn't state that they got back at 'em a year or two later.

I figured I would put a thread up about the show, not how much everyone apparently hates Seth Davis ;)

Maybe I missed something. Seth Davis is not with the BIG Network, is he? I suppose this was a special invite to do the show for the BIG network since other non-BIG coaches were there. I was just surprised to see this on the network. How did this go down anyway? Anybody know?

Haha, fair enough WT!

Do some of you actually think that Fran was directing his comments on the 5th year transfer rule to Fred Hoiberg? LOL!! He doesn't stay up all night worrying about ISU like some of you do.

It was a comment about the sport in general. A ton of teams transfer in 5th year players.

Fran was all mid major before Iowa. I suspect he knows how much it would have hurt his teams over the years if he developed a guy over the course of 4 years into a stud only to see them leave. Said player can now go play wherever he chooses...not good for the coach that developed the player or saw the diamond in the rough. The mid major loses their best player and Arizona, Ohio State, Iowa State, etc. get the piece they're missing for 1 year.

I liked one of the points Fran made in regards to transfers in general, I won't quote it because I don't remember word for word but it was along the lines of- now if a player ends up at a mid major school and they put up stats, they are immediately shopping themselves to bigger schools.

Windsor, I completely agree with you (Fran) on this. They need to get rid of the 5th year rule. Because it hurts mid-majors and college basketball becomes free agency. Mid major coaches are not rewarded.

A poster earlier said that Fran was referring to Fred (Hoiberg). The poster believes that because Iowa State gets 5th year transfers, that that is the reason why Fran doesn't like it. My point was that he could care less about what Hoiberg is doing in Ames. Too many posters don't realize that basketball exists outside of the state borders.

He was putting words into Fran's mouth. He was obviously not referring to ISU.

Exactly, Fran was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer.

I wish Fran woulda named names in regards to the tampering deal... He talked with as much certainty as you could have in regards to being ****** off about it. Didn't he say he was 100 percent certain at what happened and what coach did what? Davis of course was just loving how candid he was being. I'm greedy I wish he'd have thrown out what coach it was? (It wasn't Bo at Wisky in regards to Brust was it) I thought that was all fine he just left when Lick did I thought.

So.........butthurt?

It's probably a coach that is still active and he competes against. I still don't think he would have said names in that setting either way, though. Too many PR problems.

It was when he was at Siena so it's no one from the B10.
