Tailgate spot question

Hey folks, its been a very long time since I have been to Kinnick. Saturday will be the first time in quite some time. Any ideas for a tailgate spot. Planning on having a grill, table, popup tent, along with games. Any suggestions are appreciated.

across from Finkbine is pretty solid. $20 to park. Easy to get to. Little bit of a walk, but worth the convenience factor IMO.

I would recommend the Finkbine commuter lot. Stadium is fairly close. Downtown is quite a slog but doable if you want to head that way. The strip is a little closer if you would rather head that way. If you know anybody tailgating or are inviting people chances are that they will be somewhere in the area at some point.

The downside is that parking is $20. But you can park much further away for the same price.

Question to the experienced tailgaters...

6:30 kick...bringing my kids to their first game, complete with tailgating experience. Any of you know how early we might need to get to Finkbine Commuter lot? 4 hours prior to kick? 2 hours?

Thanks in advance.

For a season opener at night and still wanting to get a spot and tailgate, you're gonna want to be there by noon.

On the 50 yard line inside Kinnick should work for you. I don't think anyone would mind. You'd probably even make the local news at 6p that night!;)

Fry is right...don't wait. Spots will be taken early. Noon may not even be early enough.

On a related note, I'm always "amazed" (to put it nicely) at the people who try to drive down Melrose or Hawkins less than an hour before the game. Come on...

I feel that it isn't usually too bad for night games, but you'd be nuts to drive down Melrose right before an 11 am kick, and Hawkins (along Kinnick portion) won't even be open for most of the day.

My gut tells me this one is going to be nasty, though.

Season opener, first one ever at night, Hawk fans are (for better or for worse) stoked, four plus early draft entries/All B1G selections playing, people want to see Epenesa and Gohlston eat a zero-experience QB alive, the WR hype train...

I don't think I'd sleep on tailgate spots. If it were me personally, I'd be there by 9 AM and if you get bored the first few hours take a snooze in your bag chair. It ain't gonna be hot out.

If you are interested in taking the Hawkeye Express train while you are here and want some room to tailgate, you could tailgate at the mall and ride the train to the stadium.

If rainy I would bet you could pull in at 2pm and be fine. If it was Iowa State, I would have said be there at 2pm the day before.

Oh no, I didn't mean tailgate parking an hour before hand. Shit I park my car in the Myrtle lot the night before at 7 pm when it opens. I just meant traffic up Grand Avenue and in front of the stadium on Melrose greatly depends on start time, or I feel I've observed that. I've never been out as far on the west side as Finkbine as I'm an east side lifer, so I can't comment on that. I'm so sad that I won't be attending, had to give away some seats in the new club section that I won :(

Tailgating doesn't count unless you're near the stadium IMO :)

For us proles who can't afford lots closer to Kinnick it does :)

I can afford it because I don't have to drive across the state, just 10 minutes downtown :) It's only $20 for Myrtle, is the Finkbine lot free? I mean shit the ticket prices for the train are higher than parking in a lot downtown

Yea thought about that, but I'm saying if he want room for the RV and room to roam, that might be a nice situation along with the experience of the train. They could always leave early and enjoy the stadium tailgate. To each their own.

Just funnin you. A trip to a Hawkeye game for me and my kid is $450 minimum for tix, hotel, gas, and food. No two ways around it because I’m not driving 11 hours in one day.
