T-Minus 1 Month Until MLS Starts

I watch some soccer down here and there are some tremendous players. TV's here have it playing everywhere and people stand around and watch it like we do BB, FB, BB, women's swimming, and so on...I watch it for a little and find what some of the players do amazing but still find the game overall mostly boring and end up changing channels or doing something else.

Now, I do want to go to the Olympic Stadium in Quito one day and watch the national team play someone like Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, or perhaps even the US if they come here, just to see what the atmosphere is like and to see the women in the tight T-shirts that say "I luv futbol"

Soccer might be cool. I just don't get the strategy.

Yeah, like anything else, you just have to watch a lot of it. The strategies are actually very recognizable if you have an eye for it.

Back to MLS> Freddy Montero was mentioned in this thread, and I had an immediately negative reaction. This, in my opinion, is demonstrative of why MLS is becoming a great league. Players are becoming identifiable; fans are forming opinions and becoming truly in-synch with what is happening around the league. The gameday atmosphere has been well-documented, and it's true; MLS games are just awesome to attend. But more to the point, MLS is attracting quality players (like Montero, Beckerman, Casey and Gaven) who spend their entire careers in the league and involve into heros or heels. There is a level of consistency now that is just awesome.

By the way, if anyone needs to be plugged in, mlssoccer.com is a fantastic web site. Watch out in March, they offer deals for an online DVR that lets you watch every non-NBC game for $50 for the entire season. It's awesome.

The moral of the story, Broderick, is that if you watch the games the league will succeed. And I guarantee that if you watch enough, you'll eventually love what you see. Besides, there are a bunch of national team prospects in the league. Watching MLS gives you great perspective on USMNT.

Landon should really stay with Everton.

He certainly has had a lot of success there, I agree. There was a time when US players leaving for Europe was a problem, but now that MLS has some pull outside of the USMNT crowd, I think it is phenomenal that we have our high calibur players making noise in Europe. Besides, LA Galaxy is so robust and successful, I'm not sure what else he needs to accomplish there. I can certainly see where you're coming from, and wouldn't blame him one bit if he made the move.

I don't know about watching soccer, buy I do enjoy me some FIFA soccer on XBox, I've actually learned the game through it. I still can't get into MLS, but always love the World Cup when it comes around.

I, too, also only care to watch the international level.

I keep thinking about checking out a Colorado Rapids game, but then I remember that their stadium was built in Bum **** Commerce City.

Yeah, the Rapids are an unfortunate franchise. They built the Dick at a time when everyone was all starry-eyed about soccer specific stadiums, before we saw MLS ownership groups flex some serious muscle for good sites (see: Houston and Portland). Hence, they settled on a suburban locale and an uninspired design. Couple that with a disinterested front office, and you have a team who won MLS Cup two years ago that no one cares about. Colorado is the Tampa Bay Rays of MLS. A real shame. You should still go to a game, though. Omar Cummings is sick.

They did until this year, but MLS just signed a three-year contract with NBC. 40 league games will be carried on what was recently known as Versus, but is now known as NBC Sports Network. Additionally, National Team games and some MLS games will be shown live on NBC. This was a huge deal for MLS, and will bring the league to a lot more TV sets. Besides, Fox Soccer's coverage was butt.

Chicago Fire fan here. I played at City High and Wartburg College. I love both football and soccer. My motto is, "I don't trust an American who doesn't like football and I don't trust a foreigner who doesn't like soccer".
