Support for Detractors of Cy-Hawk Game

We know Iowa is not dumping ISU. If the people in decision making positions (and media) stepped out of the press box and actually witnessed how ugly this game has become, maybe it would happen. When it has gotten to the point where the National Guard has to be called for game security, it is time for it to end..

1. The media has no say on whether or not this game is played.

2. You might be overreacting.

Yes, The BIG seems to try to 'lead the way' by expanding to 9 games and no FCS school, but NO ONE ELSE is following suit. Coincidentally the BIG has been SHUT OUT of the last 3 playoffs (since BIG expanding to 9 games). Previously, almost every year the BIG had a horse-in-the-race, even when only 2 teams in playoff instead of 4. See below for last couple years P5 teams scheduling FCS

What years are they looking at? I know South Carolina plays Clemson every year and has played UNC or NC State pretty regularly as well in the past several years, so they play 10 P5 games.

We all know the long day and multiple weather delays allowed a few people in and around Jack Trice to imbibe a little more than they should of. It reminded me of the 1988 Michigan game which started at 2:30, giving fans extra time to get lathered up and cause issues. The university stepped in and said no more alcohol in the stadium. No more beer, booze bottles, botas, none of it. They didn't wait for the end of the season to enforce the policy. It was put in place effective the next home game.

Where I think trouble is brewing is with the basketball series. Two years ago Pemsl got tangled up with a couple fans in an area where they are probably too close to the court to begin with. Pemsl sustained a serious gash to his leg which kept him out of a couple games when his leg hit the screw of a chair. There were some accusations that the student gave Pemsl an extra shove but it was probably more a case of the student trying to brace himself for the collision.

We know what happened during and immediately after the game at Carver last year. Now we have to go up there this year. It could get a little tense.

Pac-!0/12 was playing 9 conference games for 10 years before B1G did...

B1G has been shutout of the last 2 playoffs, not 3. And, the B1G had more than 1 "horse-in-the-race" both of those years.
Previously (2 team playoff), B1G was shutout of the championship game from 2009-2014.

So, there is actually no dramatic drop in B1G playoff success / appearances tied to playing 9 conference games.
The PAC 12 conference is debatably the 4th or 5th best conference, year in and out. ACC and $EC both play 8 conference games, and the most FCS and weakest non-conference schedules. No wonder those 2 have dominated the playoffs. One less chance to lose in regular season

The Media CAN have a big influence.
An Iowa Treasure? . It is nothing more than a drunken hate-fest. It should go the way of Veisha, hopefully before we have any more "Veisha like" incidents.

Again, I think you're overreacting and putting too much credence in what the media can influence here.

The teams on the field play a clean game. There's been little if any nonsense between the lines. That's what matters most. There are ways to better control what happens off the field.

BTW, thanks for reading my column. The game is a treasure for this state. I've covered 21 in a row. I feel fortunate to have done so.

didn't they have a streak of over a decade where they finished the season ranked fourth or higher in the final polls before the playoff system?

Yep. Top 4 every year 1987-2000. Not bad!

What I remember most about them, though, is when Bowden was trying to get them established in the early 80's, they always played crazy schedules. They were Independent, and they'd play anybody, anywhere!

It made for some up and down rankings, but it was fun.

They finished #8 in '79 (Bowden's 4th year), #5 in '80. Lost to Barry Switzer in the Orange Bowl both years.

'81 they started #19, and this is their schedule:
Louisville (W)
Memphis St (W)
@ #17 Nebraska (L)
@ #7 Ohio St (W)
@ Notre Dame (W)
@ #3 Pitt (L)
@ LSU (W)
W Carolina (W)
#13 Miami (L)
#14 Southern Miss (L)
@ Florida (L)

Only 5 home games! The freakin' globetrotters! 6-5, no bowl. Next year, hop back up and finish #10.

We’ve won the game in most years but I certainly wouldn’t call it one sided. It’s generally a competitive game and the clowns certainly could have beaten us this year and others so this is light yrs from the Hayden beat down days when this game was a mere after thought
You seriously need to get it through your head that iowa isn’t a playoff caliber football team with this staff. If it was, the scheduling talk wouldn’t even be a topic of discussion. Nor would who the next coach would, clock mgmt or bary garta
You seriously need to look at your own posts before you hit send. Most of Hayden's beatdowns were during the eras of Donnie Duncan, Jim Criner and Jim Walden. And they weren't always beatdowns. I remember games in the late eighties and early nineties that were decided by ten points or less. Scores like 10-3, 31-28 and 45-35.

You're not going to get 59-21, 57-3, 43-7 ot 48-9 with Campbell across the sidelines. We have had some 35-3 type games the last decade of this series, as well as some closer ones, and that's probably where it's going to be for a while.

If you want mid 1980's beatdowns, check out some of our recent scores against Nebraska and Illinois. Not to mention Ohio State. I know Hayden roughed Illinois up a couple times but if you're going to use his beatdowns as a measuring stick, then you have to acknowledge that Kirk has a few skins on his wall as well.

I stopped going to the ISU/Iowa game, years ago. I took my son (8 years old at the time) over to Ames for the game. His first collegiate football game. We followed a group of Cy fans in that were wearing F*** Iowa t-shirts. That was very mild in comparison to what many dealt with Saturday. A few told me they would never go over there again. Sad that it has come to this, but this is the society we live in. I am glad for you that the experience is still pleasant in the press box.

With regard to the ISU game: the game has been nationally relevant maybe once in the history of ever, and that was this year. And...it seems like there was a fair amount of ugliness.

Why not play other P5 teams from the big twelve, acc, sec, or pac twelve?

I get that the game is really important for ISU, and that many people in Iowa like the game, but for those outside of Iowa (and I've lived outside of Iowa for many years now), no one cares.
