Sunday combine winner and losers, Stanzi listed as loser

Ricky Stanzi, QB, Iowa
On the other hand, Stanzi was not able to erase the memory of his sub-par Senior Bowl performance. Through the week in Mobile, Stanzi kept having trouble making throws with the necessary velocity, undercutting receivers who had run the right routes and were in good positions to produce. His deep balls were generally short in the combine drills, which can be embarrassing.
When the receiver has to hang there at the end of a route and wait for the throw to catch up, it's a very clear signal that the quarterback throwing those passes is going to get his teammates in trouble with defenders closing in and getting ready to make big hits.

Thought most people have said Stanzi performed well at the senior bowl.

The NFL network guys loved him. No in-between with Ricky it seems, either they love him or hate him.

Underthrowing receivers is something that's gonna keep Ricky off the field. He did it way too often at IOWA (often bailed out by his receivers).

In the NFL, those balls will all be picked off. Guys are too quick and athletic.

I'd love to see Ricky be successful in the NFL. But this is a career killer unless he's able to correct it.

This guy basically gave no insight into his combine performance. He singled in on the deep balls. Of the position drills that I saw, his deep ball accuracy was probably the weakest of all the drills. But, I would say it was on par with most of the other QBs performances, except for the few 1st round picks. He definitely made up for it though in the other passing drills. His drops were right on and he threw the ball where it was supposed to be thrown. They kept saying that most of the QBs were too concerned with making sure the WRs caught the ball as opposed to throwing the ball where the WRs should be. Stanzi was throwing the ball where the receiver should be and where a DB wouldn't be able to make a play on the ball. It was on the receivers if they weren't there. Cam Newton was sub-par at best when it came to making throws that didn't require throwing deep. His throws were all over the place.

He didn't perform well in the practices, which is more important than the game itself. This report just confirms what I have been saying. He's a good player, but will always have trouble making NFL throws. He'll find a spot but won't star.

Sounds like Ricky.

One important thing to note: at the combine, 90% of the players get ripped for what they can't do. If you listen to some draft experts you'd wonder how they can even find enough players to fill out a draft. And yet the next fall there will be guys drafted in the 6th and 7th round or even not at all starting.

That said, this write-up sounds like the guy we've seen at Iowa for the past 2+ years. He has the tools to improve, and I think he would be a good pick-up for a team with an established starting QB. He has the right attitude to be a backup and could really help the team in practice, but I don't see him throwing darts against an NFL-caliber rush and secondary. If he can grow and develop over the next year or two, then sure, maybe he's a starter down the road. Skill-wise, you can say the same thing about most of the guys in the draft, but Ricky's advantage seems to be his attitude. Good pick for teams like the Bears, Patriots, or Falcons that have an established QB but are shaky at the backup position.

Weird becuase the guys on the NFL network that are there had nothing but good things to say. Mayock questioned Stanzi's 4th quarters and taking sacks but at the combine they don't exspect all balls to be completed. Stanzi was throwing the ball to a spot which in the NFL he has to do. Faulk kept saying they were good throws, that the reciever needed to get there and not a ball he threw would have been picked off.

People saying crap about Ricky need to take a step back, not listen to everyone that writes a damn article. Find someone you think knows what they are talking about like a Kiper or a Mayock and see what they have to say. Ricky isn't going to be a 1st rounder and won't step in and start right away but the kid has grown the last 4 years and will continue to becuase he puts the work in to do so. People should be proud of the former Hawk!

Not really going out on a limb there.

LOL. "Only read those people who only have good things to say..." Very objective there.

Just because somebody writes something you don't agree with doesn't mean they're wrong. My skepticism of Stanzi's NFL chances are based on watching him the past three years, not on anything that some columnist or blogger has to say.

Doug's comments pretty much reflect what we saw several times this season. He needs exceptional receivers to look good.

He didn't say to read only those who have good things to say. He said pick one or two guys whose opinions your respect, and not get worked up over everyone else's opinion. That's good advice. Kiper/Mayock/etc. might not have good things to say about Stanzi, or any other Hawk. But if you pick them as opinions that you respect, then you are forced to admit that maybe that player just isn't as good as you thought.

Getting worked up over every Tom, Dick, and Harry's opinion is stupid. Unless your guy is the elite, no-brainer #1 pick, SOMEBODY is going to "dog him".

Without opening the article (personal challenge), I'm guessing he was a loser because of his accuracy, decision making and slow release.

Opened the article and the answer was:

Arm strength and accuracy.

This. I mean any Hawkeye fan could have written this article. I'm surprised we haven't heard more about his inability to execute a two minute offense.

don't know what to take from that article- granted i didn't see every throw he made yesterday, but the ones i did if he was missing... he was missing long. another poster mentioned it as well, that ricky was throwing to a "spot" as the NFL network commentators mentioned he SHOULD be doing rather than focusing on the completion to receivers that he's had zero time with.

Ricky will also have to learn how to throw to his secondary receivers when the primary is covered. If not, he'll be eaten alive by NFL defenses.
