Sunday combine winner and losers, Stanzi listed as loser

Ricky will be the NFL Rookie of the Year if all he has to do was hand the ball off and run a naked boot to the TE.

One important thing to note: at the combine, 90% of the players get ripped for what they can't do. If you listen to some draft experts you'd wonder how they can even find enough players to fill out a draft. And yet the next fall there will be guys drafted in the 6th and 7th round or even not at all starting.

True. but accuracy and arm strength as pretty fundamental components of a good QB. It's not as if they're nitpicking some small nuance of his game.

The good news is...Ricky is a pretty smart kid. QB is the toughest position to learn in the NFL (no surprise)...the game moves a lot faster. Maybe he'll speed up his reads and learn to lead receivers better as he adapts.

With the right mentor, he's got a shot.

don't know what to take from that article- granted i didn't see every throw he made yesterday, but the ones i did if he was missing... he was missing long. another poster mentioned it as well, that ricky was throwing to a "spot" as the NFL network commentators mentioned he SHOULD be doing rather than focusing on the completion to receivers that he's had zero time with.

I hate to sound snobbish but I honestly don't think many people really know what they're watching when they watch the combine drills.

Actually taking the time over the years to listen to guys like Marshall, Michael, and Mayock are saying really educated me on what to look for.

A lot of people were down on Stanzi because he threw 3 straight incompletes on the sprint out drills and his fades seemed to sail.

On the outs, all 3 of Stanzi's throws were PERFECT. Marshall Faulk even said as much. The point is to throw to a spot on the field - they want to see a guy put the ball where a WR can get it but a DB can't and Stanzi did that on all 3 throws.

Similarly, Stanzi was one of the few QBs who CONSISTENTLY threw the fade correctly - to the outside shoulder of the WR where a Cover 2 safety can't make a play on it. Several of the highly-touted prospects threw their "fades" right down the numbers, which in the NFL will almost always result in an INT.

Does that mean he was perfect? Certainly not. But he absolutely has solidified himself as a top half of the 3rd round pick and possibly has done enough to get into the 2nd even. He's got all of the measurables as far as height, frame, and adequate arm strength.

His biggest question mark right now is between his ears and that's coachable.

I dont care what people say his 3 & 5 step drop looked great. The ball was out on time so he didnt complete many passes so what those recievers and qbs are not familiar with one another if he could have took sandeman, mcnutt or djk with him itd been a diff story. Scouts know this theyre lookn at mechanics. Good job Cam Newton you broad jumped 11ft. But you struggled in a lot of other areas, but hey you can jump far. Stanzi will be fine hell go to the Patriots or Packers 3rd to 4th round sit behind brady or rodgers and absorb the game like a sponge hell get a shot just off his work ethic and leadership skills. I guarrantee it. The kids a winner.

Stanzi's 5-step drop was perfect, quick feet, quick release - all of the NFLN commentators mentioned it during his first run, something to the effect of "now that is what they want to see".

Newton on the other hand was slow to drop and slow to release - his footwork did not look good all day. But he's a phenomenal athlete and the NFL game is changing, slowly but surely.

For what it's worth, they all absolutely raved over Ryan Mallet's throws as if they completely forgot about Drew Bledsoe. He's got the $10M arm but he's gonna get hit, he's a statue back there.

LOL. "Only read those people who only have good things to say..." Very objective there.

Just because somebody writes something you don't agree with doesn't mean they're wrong. My skepticism of Stanzi's NFL chances are based on watching him the past three years, not on anything that some columnist or blogger has to say.
Tool alert! Love how you quote something I didn't even say. You just want something to cry about.

Your skepticism must be where your head is because you obviously didn't see a damn thing the last three years. Ricky's numbers have improved every year, his feet are better than fine as well as his arm. Unlike you he knows what he is doing and will have a job in the NFL for awhile.

Try watching the combine and listen to what the people that are actually there have to say and maybe you could get a clue.

Stanzi was a very good QB for Iowa. We were 28-11 the past 3 years. You can't really complain about that. Was he a great QB? No, but he was darn good.

I'm sure someone will take a chance on him in the NFL.

I'm really curious to see who will be the next QB at Iowa. Vandenberg? Derby? The recruit from Florida? It is going to be an interesting spring

Keep in mind this is from Yahoo Sports. I was watching Sunday & I saw that he kept overthrowing the receivers on the deep routes.

I mentioned in another thread that I do worry about the velocity at which he throws. This could be his downfall if he is not able to zip it into the receiver accurately at the next level.

If the guys from Yahoo were only looking at completions, they were completely missing the point of most the drills. The scouts are looking to see if they throw to spots, footwork & timing.

It's hard for these QB's to make a ton of completions to many different WR's that they are throwing to. The WR's litterally line up in a line & take a turn. The QB's would get 3 different throws to 3 different consecutive WR's.

I do worry about his velocity, though. But, the guy is a winner.

You know, Chuck Long had trouble in the NFL...no Iowa QB has had success in the modern (post 1971, you know, when I was born) era. Ricky can succeed, just like anyone given the chance to improve. I would be curious to read the 2001 combine evaluation of Tom Brady. I remember him being good, but obviously not enough of a standout at the time to be picked any higher than 199th. I'm not saying that Stanzi is the second-coming of Brady, but I think anyone taken from rounds 3-7 is usually a crapshoot and success can be developed by systems and coaches.
