Style points count....

Iowa's two fumbles in 3rd Q v Eastern Illinois kept them from hanging 50 on the Panthers...might have staved off Oregon leap frogging them.

Maybe we need to hang 59 on ISU in the first half on our way to a 72-0 route, maybe we jump back over Oregon?

Iowa could have scored more points if they had wanted, but it is really not the way Kirk does things. The offense ran all running plays on the last drive and I don't think any Adam and many of the other starters were in there, but I am not sure. Oregon and others may run up a score to jump in the polls and score style points, the Hawks, not so much.

Yeah, i don't get it. Although, my guess is people would have had Oregon higher had they not lost Masoli. So since they showed that the Masoli loss wasn't a huge deal than they made up the ground they lost with the Masoli dismissal.

I know Kirk has class and wouldn't intentionally roll a team by 72, I was being sarcastic.

It will all pan out in the end. Nothing style or cool about running up the score on a team thats clearly not on your level. When you play teams like Bosie St plays style points are all you have.

ill take a 2pt win over Penn st or ohio st over a 72pt win over a nobody in a heartbeat.

Would you take a 72 point win over a nobody over a 30 point win over a nobody?

Rank means nothing right now just winning and rest will take care of itself. Lets focus on ISU this week.

Winning margin used to be part of the BCS ranking equation until people got sick and tired of having scores run up on them for beauty-points sake.

THEN, they removed the SOS from the BCS equation.

Put back SOS into the BCS rankings!

God almighty...I was dumbfounded when they took out the only statistically relevent input (other than overall record I suppose) from the BCS points equation.

BCS rankings is just a big turd in the bowl. (pun intended)

Only if it counts as a double win but since it doesnt i could care less. All those "style points" that Cincy and Oregon had last year didnt help them from getting smacked around in bowl games.

Found it disgusting to see DistUrban Meyer's team throwing into the endzone against Miami-Ohio with under a minute and a half to go. What a sleaze.

Can't wait to see Florida get prison pounded by a real team.

Oregon had 59 in the first half...Their starting QB and RB didnt play a down in the 2nd Half.

Don't the computers take your opponents opponents into account?

Speaking of fumbles, why doesn't EIU have a fumble/lost in their stat line? If that wasn't a fumble on the safety, what was it?

So what, we only win by 30 and get jumped.

Meanwhile, Boise St blows a 17 point lead, is behind with like 2 minutes to go, and VTech still had a chance to win in the final minute... and they are also rewarded.

Which is it, Jon? Do style points matter or not?

Because you, like the pollsters, seems to think that style points only matter when you want or need them to matter.

And just to further show how inconsistent things are: #16 LSU beats #18 UNC by 6, yet doesn't move up, while UNC drops out of the top 25.

What I remember was in 2003, they dumbed-down the computers by taking out the SOS as a seperate entity.

It is however, meekly statistically buried in the computer poll...so yes...you're right.

Put the SOS back in as a seperate entity!

I'm no Urban Meyer fan...but I really disagree with you here.

You only get so many chances to get better in game settings. Florida's offense was absolutely atrocious for the first 3+ quarters and I think they lost a couple of possessions with special teams or defensive TD's.

If I'm a football coach, my job is to win - not avoid hurting someone elses feelings. And, as Jon said, styly points count (who raised an eye at Oklahoma only beating Utah State by 7?).

If I have a chance to a.) make my team better, & b.) avoid people doing a double-take when they see our results in the box score -- I'm going to do it.

end of rant.

How is scoring another meaningless touchdown in the last minute and 20 seconds making your team better? I would argue that having the score be closer would be a better motivational/teaching tool to your team.

It was classless, just like the ridiculous stats padding that Urban pulled with Saint Tim last year. P. O. S.

My philosophy is this.....If you get up big, put in the second team and continue to let them run the offense. That's the best way to get them real game experience. There's no sense in putting in the second team (unless your sole reason is to avoid injuries to your first team players) to get experience and then not even let them run the offense. You can still try to score when you are up big, just do it with your second and third string players. If the opponent can't stop Iowa's third team from scoring then so be it. I have no issue with what Oregon did. They were given the ball and they let their second and third team work the offense. It's not their fault New Mexico is that bad and continued to turn the ball over.
