Story: Hawkeyes Set on Defining Legacy in November

Thank you for reading and the kind words.

Maybe I'm naive or blind to it, but I feel, for the most part, tough questions are asked. They might not be asked the way some fans would like them to be asked, but they're asked.

The team is 5-3/3-2 right now. We've asked about inconsistent offense, the FG decision against Wisconsin, etc.

We need to see how this season plays out and as it does we'll ask appropriate questions. Let's see what happens.

Who knows how this season will go. Thx...

Even Rob is reaching the point where he acknowledges that whether it's KOK or Davis or someone else, Kirk just isn't built for innovation. Vandy had that spectacular comeback against Pitt, but something inside Kirk couldn't see why the miracle happened. Which is how a season with a 3,000 yard/25 TD passer can suck so much.

Think he would have stuck with the HurryUpOffense the entire season.....

Loved that comeback. Thought we would be unstoppable from then on. Outstanding receivers, Kevin Martin-Manley, Marvin McNutt, Keenan Davis and DJK.....

That was thrilling, for certain. Also this video has Herky surfing into Kinnick at the 6 minute mark.....

Notice the HawkGiant on the left with his face painted Black and Gold.....

If this team goes 3-1 and looks competitive, Kirk will earn his reputation all over again. If not....i'm afraid he and gary b will continue to swim upstream against the narrative

This is the week that the offense finally finds it rhythm and takes off, and the defense will find a way to make plays when it matters most.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are some appropriate questions:
Why do you consistently get out coached at halftime?
Why is Mitchell not playing?
Why not try younger receivers like Devonte Young?
Why did you hire Greg Davis?
Why is Bo Bower playing?
You can't recruit better safeties than Snyder and Taylor?
You believe you can compete with MAC talent?

There are many more. Why not ask them?

The only legacy this team is going to leave is a 6-7 losing season.

This team stinks on both sides of the ball

That is really harsh on the players. I dont think they stink and it would be better if the coaches let them try to make plays with a couple of blitzes, a few long passes, etc.

Rob, I agree with the just of your article. The next three games are huge for this program and will speak volumes about this team and last year's team. Was it just a fluke and a very weak schedule last year? This is a chance to prove it. Lose to all the ranked teams and it becomes evident what this program really is. Lose to all the ranked teams and GD and Barta both need to extracted from Iowa City and banished to Ames where they can live in purgatory for their sins.

Purgatory or Life in Ames.....

This is what I was talking about when I said fans don't like how we ask some questions. These questions are accusatory and brash. Questions need to be asked with some tact. They will not get the responses you want from KF, trust me. It's college football, not Watergate.

I just want to see someone ask Ferentz point blank how in the world Davis still has a job. How can you be that consistently below average/bad and keep your job this long?

At Iowa that'd eventually get you black balled and you wouldn't get to ask anymore questions.

Now, if everyone asked the tough questions (which don't have to be accusatory and harsh), they'd either have to answer them or quit responding to media people. Hmm........

It's more warm and fuzzy to write staff-friendly puff and get to rub elbows with P5 coaches and their programs. I can't say I blame them.

All good questions. I would add a couple more general ones:
The gameplan is the same every game- what do the coaches do all week?
Why are there never any in-game adjustments to help the offense / defense?

But, Barta is the one who should be asking them, not reporters. He's the only one who could (and should) demand specific answers. As Rob replied, this isn't national security- there aren't any disclosure rules for coaches. Any answer KF would give a reporter would be more of his usual crap. "It doesn't always work out- that's football".

I can only speak for myself, but I do not rub elbows with KF or anybody on his staff. I have no desire to do that.

The "media doesn't ask tough questions" mantra becomes part of the narrative when things aren't going well. I'm in my 20th season covering Iowa football and understand it comes from frustration.

The questions are asked by the media. As I said, it's not in the way some fans would like them to be asked. The good thing is that KF does a radio show every Wednesday night that allows fans to call in and ask him questions.

It would seem that you would not even have to mention Davis by name in the press conference, merely point out that through the Wisconsin game Iowa ranks 113th out of 128 teams in total offense:

http://hawkeyenation.com/football/iowa-football-statistically-speaking

Then when KF responds with the usual BS about execution, or injuries you call him on it. It is the offensive scheme, it is the play-calling. The press is tip-toeing around it, and I really don't understand why.

Agree, when the offense is that bad, and the proof is in the numbers, it's really not that hard to figure out.

Why would reporters not ask specific questions? Reporters are a part of Hawkeye marketing and coach protection? Questions about the contract are fair game.

The perceived fear of being black balled is one of the reasons why I don't get why people think KF is such a great guy. Control freak and nice guy generally don't go hand in hand. The lack of tough questions is a part of the problem (not just picking on Rob). One only has to look at PSU and what also happened in the Catholic Church to see what happens when a demagogy takes place at the extreme. I"m not suggesting that anything remotely like that is happening at Hawkeyeland. However, something doesn't seem right about the "contract". It simply doesn't make sense. KF is not irreplaceable.and Iowa not that desperate. It doesn't make sense why a coach gets a pass on being so stubborn and impossible to give hard questions too. I can understand Dolph being a part of the system and not asking really tough questions, but independent media?

Yeah, you think Eno is out of Kirk's circle of trust. Ask some of the questions Caddy suggested and you'd be so far for his C of T, it'd feel like you were banished to Siberia.

I agree with most, while they may seem appropriate and questions we want answered there is simply no way he's going to respond truthfully.

I can't see any coach responding to "why is Bo Bower playing" or "you can't recruit better safeties than Snyder and Taylor" or "you believe you can compete with MAC talent". While I admittedly laughed reading those, the fact is no decent coach would address these because (1) its a direct attack at his players and (2) its a direct attack at him personally. Worded differently there's a chance you get an answer. Worded like that I don't think there's a chance in hell, but would love to see/hear his response.

so much dumb

Here are some appropriate questions:

Why do you consistently get out coached at halftime? They ask this - it's asked "What can you do differently at half time to have your team better prepared in the future"

Why is Mitchell not playing? "They ask this, it's asked "Will we see more of D Mitchell this week?"

Why not try younger receivers like Devonte Young? They ask this, it's asked "Will we see any of the younger guys like Young crack the line up this week? We noticed him move up on the depth Chart"

Why did you hire Greg Davis? This is dumbest question on earth and one that's likely to get you shut out for being an idiot. It's not a "hard" or "tough" question that NEEDS to be addressed in week 10 of the college football season. It's dumber than ballz and no reporter in his right mind would ask it and that's not because they'd be worried to be out of the circle of trust, it's because it's not an appropriate question leading into the Penn State game.

Why is Bo Bower playing? This question is asked, it's asked "Will we see more of Hockaday this week or will there be any sort of shuffling around at the Will?"

You can't recruit better safeties than Snyder and Taylor? This question is asked, but not asked like you're an absolute idiot, it's asked "In previous seasons, you've had great safety play like the years you had Bob Sanders and guys like Tyler Sash, do you see yourself looking for those types of guys in the future or do you think there are any guys on the roster coming up that might be able to contribute?"

You believe you can compete with MAC talent? This is a question that is asked, routinely again, not in week 10 of the season and with a little tact but it's asked and it's responded to by talking how Iowa is very much a developmental program - it's not asked like you're an A hole.

November is likely to start off with 2 losses and both could get ugly. It will be interesting to see if Iowa can get a home B1G win. They haven't gone winless in home B1G games since 1999.

Yea no matter who the OC is KF is going to be involved, but it would give me (and I would guess a lot of fans) at least some hope if Davis retires or is replaced.
In 2014 and 2015, for examples, those Iowa offenses were one of the top 5 most productive offenses during the KF era. Why would it give you some hope if Davis retires?
