Stokes to announce Thursday

From what I have heard, UCONN has a crappy,urban campus. This is clearly all about BB for her, which is not surprising. Just bugs me that all these Iowa kids like Barnes,Hinrich,Collison,ect all bail out on Iowa. Now Stokes,a legacy recruit.

I blame ESPN and the influence of TV...all the games are on, so kids grow up in Iowa as Michigan or UCONN fans....see Adrian Arrington.
 
I think the thing that stings is that the women's program is riding pretty high right now, and could get even higher. I have a hard time holding a grudge against Barnes, as both Iowa and ISU's programs are barely even shadows of what they once were. But Kiah could have been the final piece, not the one to really get things moving in the right direction, which is what Barnes would have been.
 
So wrong on so many levels. What a disappointment.

Tell me why are they even having a presser if the choice has been made? Isn't that what a press conference is suppose to be about, the anticipation of knowing the decesion?

I think some people need to relax a little bit. How can people blame a 18 year old for wanting to play for the most dominant team, across all of college sports, in the the country the past decade. Good luck to you and enjoy your titles.
 
Could run the risk of being a small fish in a big pond. Go to Iowa, be the toast of the town. 5 bucks says she doesn't finish there
 
Wow... this is pretty pathetic. Everybody on this board made fun of ISU for the meltdown in not receiving Harrison Barnes commit... and this is the same thing. Iowa's womens program has been average at best since Vivian Stringer left. Yes there have been a couple of Big Ten Titles... but the level of play in the conference is not that of the Big East or Big 12.

Yes we are Iowa, and will always be Iowa. I love the hawks and all of their athletic programs. But some of us need to learn to back off of an 18 year old kid who is making a decision that is in HER best interest. OUR best interest is not what is best for her. And our perception of what is in her best interest is not right either. Only she can make that decision.

I will go out on a limb and say that I wish Kiah the best at UCONN, I will be cheering for her as long as they are not playing the Hawks.

Stokes has more of a connection to Iowa than Barnes did to Iowa State.

Also, Iowa WBB is in a way better position than Iowa and ISU MBB.

I don't wish her the best or the worst. I wish Connecticut the worst though.
 
Congratulations to Kia. I know it was a tough decision for her but in the end she went to where it was best for her. She took on the challenge of competing against the best on a day to day basis. She took on the pressure of higher expectations. Lastly she left her comfort zone to take on these challenges. Kia gave Iowa and its staff every opportunity and listened with an open mind. I wish her the very best.

If it was me, I would want to play for Iowa and beat the most dominant team in college sports. That would be more satisfying.

The thing is this... none of that matters. Barnes and Stokes families are pretty much the same, both fathers played for the schools. Darius is a walk-on who hasn't even played in a game at Iowa and may not ever.

The only thing that SHOULD matter is that Kiah made a decision that she felt was in her best interest and in line with the goals that she has set for herself. I think that it is honorable that Greg did not want to know his daughters decision ahead of time because he didn't want his reaction to be an influence on her.

If there is any team in this state that should feel snubbed it should be that she never gave ISU a chance, and they are FAR superior to Iowa in womens bb. Makes me sick to say that because I grew up going to watch Vivian Stringers teams play, but the Iowa womens bb team has been average at best... they never do anything in the tournament, and they win big ten titles when the league is down. If I were in Kiahs shoes and I liked what UCONN had to offer me... I would probably make the same decision even though I am sure it was extremely hard for her.

Final Fours - UConn 11, Iowa 1
Players coached by Auriemma currently in the WNBA - 11, Bluder 0

Since Bluder took over at Iowa (2000-2001) -
Iowa has gone no further than the 2nd round in the NCAA tourney,
UConn - 5 NCAA championships, 7 final fours, 9 elite eights and 10 sweet 16's. The last time they lost in the 1st/2nd round 1992-1993.

Not to hard to decide if you're 18 and want to win a National Championship, and play at the next level.

Yeah, I mean why would you want to represent your home state? One where your Dad is a legend. One where your bro plays for the mens team. One that you presumably grew up a fan of. One who is ranked in the top 25 preseason and has some great young players, who if you joined could make a pretty good run for the next few years. Why would you want to do that when you could go to a semi-pro team?
 
Just to be clear, I still wish Kiah the best. I'm disappointed about her decision, but I will pull for her regardless, just like I will for Barnes. I just realize why this stings people MUCH harder than Barnes going to UNC.
 
Pro sports is about getting the best deal you can college is suppose to be about a community. You can get the same education at most schools. If all the best players went to the same school college athletics would suck. Women's college basketball is fun to watch, with the EXCEPTION of UCONN. When you get the best players and win every game by 30 points what is the point of even having it as a college sport.

I will never root for an Iowa kid at another university when they turned their back on their own state. I won't wish them ill will, but won't root for them.

And I don't understand when parents say that it will be just their kids decision. It is a parents job to help with that decision especially with a choice like this. The parent should have some say in the decision. I will with my kids.

Heck, as a coach I have some influence on my HS players. I try to give them the best advice I can. A couple years back I had a young player that was very good and chose to go to an out of state school because the school had been top 10 the past few years. I told that player it was the worst decision for them because they would not get a good chance to play. After two years they transfered and came back and told me how right I was. That person went on to have a very successful two years at an in state school.

My point there is that going to UCONN might be the best thing for Kiah but it definitely is the parents job to influence and help her with that decision based on what they feel would be the best too.
 
Disappointed but not surprised, instead of being bitter Hawk fans have to figure out a way to improve our athletic programs so we can attract the top talent in Iowa and the country. Football and wrestling have proved it can happen, now the rest of the programs need to follow, whether it be fan support, top coaches$, top facilities$, ect. Build it and they will come! $$$
 
As I have said before, I wish her the best. I would think that her dad knew ahead of time and somewhat approved. Moving away is a big deal at any age. He probably didn't want to tarnish his rep. He did the right thing, he allowed his daughter to make up her own mind.
