Still want to fire Fran?

All these coaches get paid the $ of a small country. When the coaches are not performing they deserve some grief. While we'd all like to pretend it's about developing the kid for later in life I haven't seen one coach survive a long stretch of losing seasons and continue to get big $ for graduation rate. Let's be real here. They deserve the admonishment and praise. My complisult for Fran is simple so IF he would've sat Jok for Illinois would we have won? With his injury he posed more issues than solutions.

Winning at IL would be a lot more difficult than at Rutgers. Not even close. Among all D 1 teams IL is somewhat better than average. At IL is a tough place. Rutgers is not close to average.

Interesting. While playing at Rutgers may not be tough, they just took Wisconsin to OT (and maybe should have won) their previous game at a neutral site (MSG). Then, that same Wisconsin team who barely beat Rutgers then went to Illinois and won fairly easily from start to finish. Timing is everything.

Yes, I saw that. I don't think Jok being gone would have necessarily changed things. IL is a lot of things except good, but they play very scrappy defense and will chase you down where ever. Iowa lost because they didn't defend 2 of the slowest big men in the conference. They move like straight weigh oil. When Iowa loses to IL, there you can count on a big guy who seldom scores to have a career day, oft from outside.

I do know that Deon Thomas just raved how Jok was hard to defend even with a bad back.

They win two games in a row vs poor teams and some of you all think Here we go, Hawkeye hoops is back!
Uh, no.
Should he be fired? No.
Will I think he should be fired? Yes.
When? 3 years.
Why? Terrible defense philosophy
What else? Poor NCAA tourney play.

Hope I'm wrong tho!

I like Fran, but I'd like to see him develop more maturity and compassion for his fellow man. It appears to me he loses his temper a lot. The other coaches need to remind him of what the other people around him are feeling when he becomes angry and lashes out. If he knew he was hurting their feelings, I think he would stop. I think that may make him think twice about going all dickwad on people. Other than that, I think he's swell.
When I see posts like this I have to wonder if you even watch college ball other than the Hawkeyes. Fran is far from the worst at this, even in the B1G.

I watch and I don't see what you are seeing. John Groce is in a class all by himself....weird. In Fran's body language there is a lot more anger than show. Much of what I see is drama.

Who said we're back? I haven't seen any of that. What I have seen is people watching a very young team learn to play together. Do you really think the games with bad D is what Fran expects? Of course not, again, YOUNG team trying to learn how to play at this level and with each other. The D has looked excellent at times. The game doesn't slow down for everyone at the same time.

Exactly. We'll never get to the Vegas 16 Tourney with Fran as the head coach.

I am not disagreeing with you but Justin curious why you think your statement is true? He sure has B1G problems in the conference tournament.

I give him three more years to prove he can play and develope this program into a true conference competitor and battle for a outright title.
I will give him a pass next season because Joc will be gone and that will leave a big hole. We could be great next year but we will still be young. The year after that our current freshmen will be juniors and the class coming in will be sophomores. At that point no one can play the youth card. That's year two and he will be on the hot seat by the end of that year IF things aren't going well.

The season after that one will be his last season at Iowa if he falls flat with a senior and junior laden team. Do I expect that to happen? No. I think he has some momentum going now with the type of players he is getting and I expect him to finally make a break through and land that point guard everyone has been waiting for.

Sorry for the typos. I have the worst time with the auto correct on this forum. It's like my IPhone 6 and this site are at war with each other. Just now I have to re-type the last three sentences three times.

I will reiterate that Fran has earned a pass this year and generally has brought us back to the Tom Davis years. And I would agree with your post if Fran was brand new to the program. But the excuses you're making are the excuses of a new coach coming in to fix a program. Once you've been at a place for more than 5 years, any handicaps that people are using to explain lowered expectations are self-imposed. This notion of a developmental program makes much more sense in football than basketball. I also think recent games have shown that you have over-estimated the effect of losing Jok.

Understand completely

No one ever said Rutgers is on par with Illinois. My point is Jok's back is so bad the kid couldn't move he looked awful and hurt us in every aspect of the game. If your body can't do what your mind tells it then you need to sit. Fran should have been able to see this in the week of practice leading up to it and maybe we would've seen the OSU performance at IL.

His defensive philosophy has never produced top D teams. Yes occassionally we play good D and yes some teams we face are just cold that night making our D look better than it is but the wide open shots from the corners all the time are maddening. Our closeouts are bad and nobody on our team is an in your face defender that can take away the other team's best team's shooter.

Iowa has been in or around the top 30 in defense in 3 out of the last 4 seasons per Ken Pom.

If Fran can't demonstrate an ability to coach the 1/2 court.....why wait 4 years?

This is rediculous. There isn't a coach in college basketball that can't coach 1/2 court. No school would even hire that. The past two games proves he can. You don't get 80% of your made shots from assists without playing a solid 1/2 court game. Seriously think how stupid your statement is.

Didn't think so. Seems like some of y'all forget that this team is extremely young.

That being said, I love this damn team and love Fran as a Head Coach!

Go Hawkseyes!
He needs to be fired. He has no self control. You can coach kids hard in practice, but he is down right ugly in games. Would never let my kid play for him. He doesn't know how to work the officials. You can get after then without being an a$$. Also, refusing to shake hands? What is that? No, I don't want Lick or Alford back.
