Glad to know that you are a musician. Since you are, you know that Steve Perry is not at all a rock singer. There is no doubt that in his prime he had the most unique and powerful voice and was one heck of a showman on stage. I think he was one of the most talented singers ever. But he was not a rock singer. By the way, he's really not been popular since leaving Journey and that, to at least a certain degree, makes my point.
It is not a wrong premise. The analogy may not be a strong one, but there is some similarity to ferentz.
On Steve Smith, he is so talented that he could be a very, very good drummer in any genre of music. Don't you think?
What makes someone a "great rock singer" is pretty subjective. It's been argued for years. I can certainly understand someone not caring for Perry's approach to rock; personally, I thought he was perfect for the material, which was "rock" by any definition. But it's really a matter of opinion. I was reacting more to your implication he wasn't gifted or talented, which is objectively untrue. He also wrote or co-wrote most of their hits.
I agree with you on Smith. Saw him live a couple years ago in Seattle with a combo - incredible. Neil Schon was no slouch either; if Carlos Santana hires you at age 15, you can play guitar.
