Does anyone think any frosh or otherwise will break in the starting lineup?

Payne
Gatens
May
Fuller
Cole

Go Hawks!

Not likely. This core group will be experienced, and physically proven. Larson might share time with Cole, but Jarryd will be the starter, imo.

More than anything, I think the incoming class will provide this program with something they have not had in the Lickliter era--depth.

Go Hawks!

Initially I think the starters listed continue to start in 2010/2011, but I see the number of minutes that the starters play going down as the freshmen and redshirts start to get some game experience. There will be some injuries and freshman will get starts.

I think you will see Brust be part of a rotation with Payne and Gatens with two of the three on the court. I'm sure there will be two other rotations with the center and forward positions, but I don't know which freshman or redshirt will be part of the mix. Essentially I see eight players logging the minutes.

I think that Cougill could or should redshirt as a sophomore. He could use a year to physically mature, he has the size, but he needs more muscle. Maybe he can advance between now and next October. Since he and Cole, who really isn't a center, are the big men it might not be in the cards. Since I know nothing about Larson's abilities to serve as a center I'm unclear what kind of rotation at center is possible.

I would hope that there is enough development among the bigs that Cole isnt the starter, a bigger, stronger presence is needed badly.

Cole will be a senior, and unless Cougs make leaps and bounds over the offseason or one of the newcomers blows the doors off the coaches, he'll be the starter next season.

Sorry but depth on a team that is at an all-time low is not reassuring to most. But the incoming guys are solid role players...

First... I don't want to come off saying that Cole is the greatest, I think part of the problems with the basketball team is that Cole has to play the big man position and is only 6'7".

After saying that, who do you expect to step in and start? Brommer, Cougill or do you think that a freshman will be ready to start from day one?

Cole will be the starter.

My thoughts exactly. Couple that with the valuable experience these kids are earning and that's reason enough for me to look forward to the season.

I could see a possible lineup of:
Payne
Gatens
Fuller
Larson
Cole

with Brust May and Cougill and even Brommer in the mix.

I'll add to that that it can't possibly get any worse and that there isn't any other direction to go than up.

SO sure, and totally clueless to any potential off season development(Lick develops his players, right?). I would certainly hope the best player plays, not just the senior. IOWA needs bigger than a 6'6" center/forward to compete, to win, but then, to many, winning isnt essential, is it?

I think I'll wait and see who transfers after the season before I even begin to try to come up with a rotation.

I don't see how you leave the team's most athletic player -- May -- out of the starting rotation. Not saying he's the strongest or most physical, but his style of play is the most athletic.

I agree. May has been really solid this year at both ends. Also, with Fuller's presence down low this year, along with Cole, Iowa has some solid rebounding despite a lack of height.

This team really lacks ball-handling, shooting, and guard play. Fuller has shown he is effective down-low; no need to bring him away from the basket. Fuller can't guard most Big 10 wings either. These arguably could be our 5 best players, but we need more ball handling and perimeter defense on the floor.

I don't get it. The same five that are starting this year will be starting next year? How much do you think we will improve if that is the case? It's not like those five are going to get dramatically better during the summer. Cole and Fuller are still going to be shorter than their counterparts. Gatens and May probably aren't going to be able to create off the dribble.

It's broke, fix it.

I'm hoping it will be

Payne
Gatens
May
Fuller
Larson

An offseason of ball handling I think May will be able to drive and I think Larson probably already has the ball handling skills to drive against other big men (plus the much needed height). This opens things up for Gatens/Fuller who both have shown at times they can penetrate. I agree though Cole will probably at least start at the beginning of the season but Lick showed this year with Bawinkel he has no problem changing a Sr/Captain's role on the team.

Bench would be Cole, Brust, Cougill, Brommer, Archie, McCabe, Marble

How can you say that with any amount of certainty?
