Starting Five- 2010

I would hope that there is enough development among the bigs that Cole isnt the starter, a bigger, stronger presence is needed badly.

No one on the team, heck, perhpas no one in the Big 10, is as strong as Cole.

He can't create, he can't shoot, and he can't jump exceptionally high, but he is incredibly big and strong.

How can you say that with any amount of certainty?

You're right, I shouldn't say that because it is probably not true. Gatens, Cole and Fuller are all scoring more points this year than last. So to say they aren't going to dramatically improve isn't exactly what I meant to say.

It's hard to describe so here's another shot: We have our starting 5 this year that seems to be able to hang with our opponents (for the most part) but we are undersized and athletically challenged to say the least. Sure there are players like May that can jump through the roof but that's about it. We are adding Freshman to the team and a RS JC transfer that by all accounts isn't that good on the offensive side of the ball. These Freshman appear to be pretty good but not great so expecting one of them to step in right away and play is probably asking too much so that leaves us with the same starting 5. The same starting 5 that have lead this team to one of the worst records in Iowa basketball history. I think they will improve individually but as a whole are they really going to improve enough to compete in order to finish in the top half of the Big10?

Damn, a reasoned post. Maybe, maybe not. Assuming everyone stays, it's not out of the realm of possibility that they do improve as a whole over the offseason. They've been in "the system" for a year, and have a good idea of what their individual roles are. I don't think they'll be good enough to finish in the top half of the conference, but I also think that expecting Iowa to improve that much coming off of this season is a bit of a pipe dream.

If finishing in the top half of the standings is the only way you'll consider next year to be a success, you're all ready setting yourself up to be disappointed.
