Starting 5

Stormin:

In response to your "um, no Basabe" response to me...

I was saying the OP's lineup would have to play toreador D, or the lineup I named would have to take the floor.

The OP's lineup is just too small to play real defense in the B1G.

Responding to the guy who said Cole was only 6'6", he was a strong 6'6". Iowa doesn't have another guy like that.

How many Big Ten teams even play a center? Of these, how many are good?

If White develops like we think, I think you'll see that smaller line-up at times, particularly at the end of games. The great thing about basketball is that you have to play both ends. The mismatch would go both ways.

A big plodding center is going to have a difficult time running the floor with Mel or White. Mel should be explosive enough to go past a guy like that, while White would draw him out with his jumper.

I'd like to see us spread the floor with a line-up like that. You'd have shooters in White, Gatens and hopefully Marble, along with guys who could penetrate like Cartwright, Marble and White.

They have to find a way to gets some easier shots compared to last year, even if they get pounded down low on defense.

Some of you have very short memories. How tall was our starting center last year? I'll give you a hint it starts with a 6' and ends with a 6". White is slightly taller with more basketball skills than Cole. What we lose on one end (defense) will be made up for on the other end (offense).

Brommer and others can come in and give us a bigger body when needed. White could give us a productive 15 to 20 minutes per game. Brommer 10 to 15 and McCabe 5 to 10 and Olaseni could get his feet wet if needed.

Good point 1 thru 5. I say Brommer starts, but the lineup that may play more minutes of the game, could be this:

Cartwright
Gatens
Marble
Basabe
May/White/McCabe

If we can control some of the tempo, out maneuver with the motion offense and keep teams on the run, which Fran likes to do, then height won't matter as much with someone that can jump out of the gym and grab rebounds (i.e. May). If the tempo stays slower, then look for more Brommer/Olaseni/Archie and more fouls.

I agree Duff. I could see 10 and 5 from Brommer, and not the kind that jackl is talking about.

Um...we won 11 games last year. I'd love to not repeat that with another undersized front court.

Please enlighten us and list the requirements for being "legit".

I wouldn't be surprised to see Brommer go for 10 and 5 this year.

10 and 5 in Big Ten play would be legit. Brommer is not getting 10 and 5

Unless he improves drastically I would guess 5 points and 5 rebounds avg in Big Ten play

I hope I'm wrong but if Cole gets 8 pts and 6 rbs I dont see Brommer being better

This year Brommer will be the man at the 5 with Gabe and Archie splitting most of the leftover minutes. Regardless of the tempo we play, what we need out of our 5 is athe ability to defend down low (alter some shots is a bonus), rebound and outlet. If the 5 can run with Basabe, Marble and May great but not necessary. No player is as quick as a good outlet pass. Defend, rebound, outlet and then hump it down the floor for a late flash down the lane, a put back or an offensive set.

Brommer will start and Olesani will get his shot and IMO, be placed in a position to be sucessfull, even if that's only 4 minutes per game.

To the person that said, how many teams play a legit 5 and how many are good...just about every Big Ten team will have a 5 with legit size. This has been a glaring weakness for Iowa when it comes to defense, Iowa cannot defend a quality big man. Yes Basabe had 3 blocks head to head against Sullinger, but Sullinger still had 20+ pts and 10+ rebounds. Iowa has not been able to put two guys on the floor consistently over 6-7 that have defensive ability. Not to say that Brommer does, but at least there is some size behind him and will be some around him, unlike what Cole had, except for having Basabe for a season and Basabe is not exactly a defensive stalwort.
Brommer is not going to get any postseason accolades, but he isn't exactly terrible either. If Brommer can cut down on his world record foul per second pace he currently holds and can stay on the floor, Iowa will be better for it.
Brommer is aggressive, hustles and has a couple post moves. Brommer gets in a hurry at times and that is what gets him in trouble, on both ends of the floor. Olaseni will get his chance and it would not surprise me to see him have real contributions on the defensive end and on the glass. The center position in today's game is only noticed when there is a special player at that position, like a Sullinger, otherwise the position is leaned on to play defense, rebound and capitalize on the easy scoring chances.
