Stanzi needs to pick it up

I think most KC fans were hoping he'd be better than Cassell. He isn't so far and that bums us out.

So you were just really setting yourself up for disappointment then?

Funny how people view things differently. The following is from the Arrowhead Addicts Blog:

"Stanzi looked very good today and got more reps than Quinn by far. He had a string of 10 straight completions moving the team down the field until his inexperience showed when he threw a pick right into the gut of a LB who dropped it and followed that with a fastball right back to him on the next play that he held onto. Stanzi was the only QB that stayed late making throws especially the out route he got picked on.

Quinn looked ok and continues to make a push to beat Ricki for the #2."

Maybe KC fans wouldn't be so fickle if KC journalist didn't try to intentionally mis-lead?

People that thought he was going to be anything more than a career backup were setting themselves up for disappointment. Stanzi wasn't a great QB (Number 3 in the Ferentz tenure in my opinion) He was good, not great....and don't cite his senior year stats....senior year Stanzi was so risk adverse it made me sick (taking sacks at Arizona and Wisconsin with game on line instead of at least giving us a chance) A great QB has that moxie and swagger...ala Tate and Favre.

Yes. A long career as a backup is the best he can realistically hope for. Stanzi will probably be pretty happy with that if it comes to pass.

Maybe in the long-term...if he's able to retire with a little coin in the bank. But I doubt that's the case while he's still playing. With the possible exception of a few backups in the twilight of their career who are just looking to pad the bank account a bit, I doubt that's true of 99% of QBs in the league.

Stanzi was surrounded by a lot of talent at Iowa. He will need the same thing in KC to be successful.

That goes for just about every qb out there doesn't it? The part about needing good talent around him to do well anyway. We'll get an idea about how good Manning is with an entirely new cast. I think the preseason games are what will make or break Stanzi this yr. If he does well and is neck and neck with Brady they'd rather keep Stanzi and maybe see if Brady is worth anything on trade market. If Brady plays better and Stanzi don't look that good than he could be clutching a clipboard till next yrs pre season. Stanzi would really have to set the world on fire to really start any qb battle with Cassell.

This was Stanzi's first year to go through OTA's and have a real camp and from a lot of accounts he has been just as good as Quinn and sometimes better. This is essentially like a rookie year for him. He was never going to be someone that came in and started right away in the NFL, but if he keeps developing he can be a decent NFL QB. He is a great leader and works hard and that is what it takes sometimes. It is not always the most talented player that makes it the NFL.

Stanzi barely got any action last year in preseason, and if he did it was with the fourth quarter scrubs. I'm surprised by some of the qoutes from Iowa fans on here regarding how much he meant to this team. W/o stanzi we don't beat Penn St 2008 and thus spring boarding our 3 year run of bowl wins. We also don't beat msu 2009, ind 2009 and probably will be in a national title game if it wasn't for his ankle in 2009.

Sure his teams were good, but didn't Tate have a national title caliber team supposedly in 2005 and 2006? Tate ended his career yelling at teammates in an embarrassing loss to Minnesota. Stanzi ended his on a 3rd consecutive bowl victory. Sides a miraculous 2004, Tate really didn't perform well when games were on the line. Sometimes he would do things that would hurt his team ala ISU 2005, that left him injury plagued.

I loved both quarterbacks but in terms of great players that embody what TEAM and WINNING are about I will always pick stanzi before Tate. Not bashing anyone, just my opinion.

I hadn't seen this so thanks for posting ForeverHawk. The media acted like he was the second coming during OTA's and five days into practice, they are writing him off completely...and I'm sure a lot of it is based only on what they hear from other media sources. 10 straight completions is pretty darn good, but again, this is the first I heard of it.

Being the second string QB is the greatest job in the world. You still get to play a little football, you rarely get hurt, you attend meetings and get to hang out on the sideline on game day. And, they pay you pretty well. Now, unless you are really gifted, you hope the starter never goes down and you are forced into the fire like Caleb Hanie was last year and you are exposed for what you truly are.
