Stanley Quote

So I was listening to KCJJ on the radio and the announcer read a Stanley quote on the air. It went something like this.....

"I've improved my foot work and I'm faster at reading plays, but I still have a long ways to go."

That last part worries me. A long ways to go into becoming a really good QB? Are we stuck with an average or below average QB here? I'm sure you can read into it in different ways.

Sounds like he has not reached that magic comfort level yet where everything slows down for him, which is not surprising. He probably won't be at that comfort level until the 2018 pre-season. It will hit him during the spring or fall of 2018, when it suddenly occurs to him, hey I know this stuff.

Think about it, any true sophomore QB at a P5 school who is about to start his very first game would say the same thing ... I'd be more worried if he did not say that.

If you have ever listened to any player or coach at Iowa since Kirk has been here it's always "I'm not there yet" or "I have a long way to go". Almost every single time. It's classic Kirk coach speak.

Don't forget he is the son of a coach. Even if he wasn't I think most players understand that as a So, they have a lot of improvement yet in their career.

I'm pretty sure he followed that statement by saying like anything there's always room for improvement. I can't imagine being a 20 year old with the pressure of leading a Big Ten football team. Add in dealing with answering questions from multiple media outlets knowing the smallest of things said will be criticized.

Put me down as him just being humble and having the mentality to always work to get better.

Bingo.. I'd hope that if he goes on to have a great year he'd say the same thing at this time next yr....

I'm less worried about his Kirk-like quote than I am his leadership skills. Sounds like a great kid and he's smart to play it humble at this point. Yet, there's been plenty of talk about his shyness and the need to be more vocal. Some guys lead more by example...some talk more...but a QB better be talking in the huddle and on the field. The rest of the offense (especially young WRs) needs that confidence.

Sounds like Nate has arm strength similar to Dan McGwire. I'll hold off on comparing him to Elway for now.

Kids like Stanley were born for this....he will have a few bumps, but I think he will be a great Q for Iowa. I'm so pumped for this weekend. He will be just fine....it's IOWA football people, best time of the year....embrace him and wish him well

Where is all this shyness talk coming from? Leadership is not about being vocal. Left to their own devices, players pick their leader. A good example is a pick up game and two are named to choose players for their side. So, would the players pick him to lead a team?

The topic has come up in interviews, radio and even here on HN (see link) with regard to the QB competition. https://www.hawkeyenation.com/football/shy-hawkeye-qb-nathan-stanley-stepping-comfort-zone

No, leadership is not all about being vocal (as I stated in my post). But at QB I think it's arguably more important than most positions. I expect Stanley will come into his own this year in that respect.

I think he's just being humble and trying to fit into KF's system. JR was closer to this personality than was CJ. We pretty much know with all things being equal, which one KF would prefer for the KF Way. Probably means game manager season coming up as opposed to a maverick "gamer" type.

Seriously though, everyone should re-evaluate themselves periodically. Always room for improvement. The difference is admitting it publicly.

I am hoping that for the first time, in a LONG time, a young Iowa QB improves over the course of his career...rather than regressing out of fear of failure and boring play calling...

I'd rather he say he has stuff to work on than be arrogant and talk about how great he is and how he has it all figured out. We're gonna be alright with Nate at QB I feel.

They always say that. Coaches instill in them to never think you are where you need to be but to always improve. They actually probably teach them to say certain things at press conferences or to the media. Every QB I've ever heard be interviewed has stated this. Nothing to worry about.

Seriously, what did you want him to say...."I've improved my foot work and I'm faster at reading plays, I'm good to go dude."
