Spring Depth Charts

He may not go. Who knows. OL should be pretty solid for years to come. There's depth not seen on that chart that will develop into some good players. Either freshmen now or incoming freshmen.
Wirfs is gone. And he should be.

It’s good for him and ultimately our recruiting status. Why the Ferentz brigade can’t seem to win ballgames with all these successful pro players is another topic...

But barring an injury, Tristan Wirfs is going to be walking through Mercedes dealerships next April. Book it.

He'll be bringing at least a couple of JR classmates with him as well.

I don’t think any of those guys translates to a Tristan Wirfs-style recruit.
Ezra Miller was a 4* who comes in at 6’6 305 and enrolled early for this season. By the time the 2020 season rolls around he will have a full year and a half in our system and with Doyle. I’d think he will be ready to go by then. Not saying he will instantly be as good as Wirfs but replacing good players is kind of the nature of college sports.

It’s good to see Tyler Linderbaum up to 285. That’s plenty big to play center and I think he will ultimately be the starter there.

Nothing too exciting in this outside of Merriweather taking over the starting safety role as a sophomore. I think in other places they have guys that have been around awhile listed in the two deeps that will ultimately get beaten out by some of the younger talent. At least I hope. End of spring or summer depth charts will probably give us a better insight into how the fall ones will look.

Yup.
There will be opportunity for sure, but there always is. But it will be nice having guys coming in at close to weight and having some time with Doyle, from there it's up to them and how fast they are on the learning curve.

This. There's actually a decent amount of experience, not quite what we've been used to. It's an early depth chart and about expected this early. Miller and a lot of the other players will get bigger, healthy, better. Same deal every year. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a bunch of movement in the areas of question.

Perennial Hawkeye backup, A.J. Epenesa, when he realizes he's finally made the starting defense for his final year at Iowa. Some dreams come true. I wonder if Ferentz came up and told him in person like he does the walk-ons when they finally earn a scholarship:

Hey what happened to that new "CASH" position? Who is playing the CASH position?

Why do the coaches still have this old fashioned depth chart with 3 LB's listed? That's so 2010 man. This defense has evolved. The coaches need to get with the times and actually publish a depth chart that shows the actual positions that players are playing now.

You do realize we didn't can the 4-3, right? Nor should we.

The Cash position only came about because of Hooker's exceptional ability and versatility. Not because a desired scheme change. If we get somebody of Hooker's caliber again, it'll come back as a main package, but until then it's going back to a situational look, and for good reason.

We have a lot of experience and young talent at LB after last year, and trying to get those guys on the field (Niemann in particular) is only going to help.

I would have loved to see Sleep-Dalton as a first stringer on this depth chart.
Breathe easy, he's not on campus yet.

I have a hard time believing Kirk would go through the trouble of recruiting a grad-transfer punter and still sit him for the guy we've had the past 2 seasons.

I do wonder where the hell Gersonde went though. He's got a decent leg and from what I know is healthy now, but is MIA.

Part of me thinks they kept Rastetter on there just out of respect because S-D hasn't been through an Iowa camp yet, but at the same time I also think, who the hell is he kidding?

Rastetter has been such an epic flop that I see no reason why the spot should even be up for competition.

Me as well. Kirk is stubborn, but hard to think he's blind as well.

Although I do think Rastetter may have some situational skill we could use. He does very well in the trick plays Levar Woods comes up with (even throws a nice ball), and maybe we could give him a chance as a pooch punter (kinda like John Weinke was) or an option punt look from opposing territory.

I think the last WR to catch a pass in the league was Kevin Kasper. Before CJB, the last QB to throw a pass in the league was Mark Vlasic. The only RB that I can recall that got a carry in the league during KFs tenure was Greene. While trench play is important to have a consistent winning team, teams that can't consistently get decent skill position talent are rarely going to get above the 7-8 win mark in college football.
