Spring Ball Storylines

A quality summation of our RB group but doesn’t change my thought about where they are at as a group. Maybe they will make big strides but I’m not exactly seeing it right now.

Goodson I’m very high on but likely going to take some time to see the field given 3 guys who played in front of him.

They were getting there. What I didn't like was for much of the season it felt like nobody could pull away from the rest. I'm not saying that is true, because with IKM injured, we used Sargent and Young fairly even iirc. But it just seems like it from an outside stand point anyway there wasn't enough competition in that room.
As said though our run blocking wasn't exactly stellar either. A problem I expect to be resolved. They could pass block well, so now is the time for them to put it all together.

What I wanna see is how Nate Stanley handles his senior year. Is he gonna take control of the game from the onset? Is he gonna be more confident and consistent? He needs to stop throwing bullets on short routes and show some touch on his passes. He needs to identify open targets quicker and hit them in stride. I feel like he is progressing when it comes to feeling pressure coming at him as long as he is able to maintain focus on his receivers downfield. Everything begins and ends on offense with the QB and this team will only go as far as he will take them. If he can also sustain long drives, he will make the defense's job much easier, and put a lot of pressure on the opposing defense. This is what I'm looking for outta Stanley, not just another SR. QB regression again. He needs to lay it all out there on the line this year. Play to WIN!, Not play not to lose.

I thought Stanley really took a step forward against Mississippi State. He made a nice touch throw on Easley's 75 yard TD catch (hitting him in stride), and converted a tough 4th and 3 play with his legs later in the game during our TD drive that put us ahead 24-19. He wasn't making those plays earlier in the year......

I agree. But recently, the QB's that we have had haven't had stellar SR. seasons. They always seem to play not to lose instead of playing to win. Would like to see Stanley change that narrative. This is his last season so if he wants to improve his draft stock, he needs to take the lead and play with a purpose this year. Sure, this next seasons schedule is tougher than last years, but if he can take that next step forward, we can have a nice season.

It will be interesting to see updated player weights when they come out in the spring.

Most interested to see:
-Kallenberger
-Linderbaum
-Waggoner
-Jestin Jacobs (apparently he was under 200 at Army AA game so will be interesting where he is at)
-Reiff

I'm kind of excited to hear what walk-on's get talked about. They seem to always throw a couple names out.
Also glad to hear Nixon is a go. Been rooting for him since he got here.
Be interested in the DL coach.

There is just a ton to look forward to!!!! Spring ball is here!!

Sounds like KF will have a press conference tomorrow for the start of Spring Ball. Should be some good storylines.

Not sure if/when we will see a depth chart.

Cool video. Couple nice plays by Tyrone Tracy and DJ Johnson in there. Two key guys in my opinion. Tracy is such a smooth runner I think he has some YAC ability that we haven’t seen much of at Iowa. Petras is pretty tall and throws a nice ball.

I had to put it on mute--that "music" is atrocious.

Not to a potential recruit it isn’t. Regardless of what you think of the music, I do think they’ve done a really good job with social media recently.

Not sure the next Brandon Scherff or Josey Jewell types will dig it...but that’s probably not this fly vids’ target market.

This spring it's all about the receivers. That's the festering sore that needs to be fixed. Everything else is in the works. But how do you replace Fant, Hockenson and Easley?

I don’t think we can replace that production with any one area. I think it will need to come from a combination of running the ball much better than we did last year, the outside WRs stepping up, and hopefully better field position (punter).

Been said to death, but I think Smith and ISM are primed for big years. Watching games from last season showed their separation improving as the season went on, and we already know their jump ball skills. While they're going to miss Fant and Hockenson eating up attention from DC's, they also now have their shot at being the No. 1 and 2 targets on most plays rather than later in the progression.

Nico Ragaini seems to be sneaky-athletic-with-good-hands slot receiver version 5.0, so expect him to get a lot of targets if he earns the snaps. Tracy intrigues me due to his playmaking ability and chance to play the slot or split out wide as well.
