Well that clears things up. It seems this was all a big misunderstanding.
So he was oblivious to the emails on the thumb drive, interesting..
What's the old line, "none proclaim their innocence as loudly as the guilty."

While I hardly think he's as innocent as he proclaims if any of the "dirty 4" are somewhat clean I would believe that he's the cleanest. It's very possible that Curley, Paterno, and that VP would not want to give him the full story, either out of self preservation or to protect him given his position at the university.

Because he likely could still be charged in relation to the cover-up. He's proactively trying to exculpate himself.
Curley and Schultz are facing charges, but somehow, Spanier has skated.

I dunno, the Fed investigation makes it possible they kept him somewhat in the dark. The Feds are actually pretty good at what they do, unlike Barney an Andy on the local force.
So I guess there could possibly be some truth to his protestations.
It doesn't matter for him, his reputation is done. Newspapers guaranty this.

i agree with stanzi...the guy is obviously not innocent but he was probably the least guilty (if there are degrees of guilt) of all 4.

On a more serious note. There are plenty of victims in this mess. Obviously the victims and their families, but there are plenty of other people made to suffer for the selfish acts of a few "educated" men.
It isn't clear about Spanier, but he did pass a federal security clearance, so maybe they threw him under the bus too. It almost sounds like it by the attorney's actions.

Spanier hasn't been charged because he didn't perjure himself in grand jury, and even the Freeh report criticizes him more by inference than for actual actions or inactions. Based on current info I can't see him being charged, though public opinion and civil litigation are another matter.
Put yourself in his shoes reading those 2 emails. They were expressly designed NOT to encourage his further interest. Shultz and Curley and (we now know) Paterno were truly despicable.
As for the GC, if half of what Spanier says is true, it sounds badly mishandled. Maybe she took tips from Iowa's former GC.
