Someone needs to teach Oglesby about effective field goal percentage

It seems to me, watching J.O., that he is more confident taking a three in transition or in an offensive set catching the ball on the move than a stand still 3 as he passed up yesterday. Anybody else notice this?

You need to understand that Fran blows smoke up his players' butts in the press. Why don't you go back and read what he said about Brommer before the season as well.

I found it:
"Andrew Brommer is the finest center I've seen in a generation, at any level. Hakeem who?" chuckled Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery.

I think so.

Hard worker, playing bigger than his height, very good outside shooter. Needs to rebound better, though, and try to stay out of foul trouble.

Stubbs is underrated too. I'm being serious.
To say McCabe is underrated is absurd. To say Stubbs is,that's just silly.

Care to expound?
Before you can be underrated, you have to be rated in the first place.

McCabe has zero athleticism, is a poor defender, and is a turnover and foul machine. He put a couple of good offensive games together but since has really regressed.

Stubbs isn't even in the conversation.

Put down the sports page and try watching a game or 2 before making such stupid comments. McCabe is playing over Brommer because he has more athleticism, is a much better defender, and is light years ahead of Brommer offensively.

.

Is this a joke? McCabe's D has been only behind Gatens for Iowa. And for his size he is an excellent shooter and ball handler. He and Marble both took huge steps forward this season. Watch a game.

Saying he's better than Brommer doesn't mean much.

Is THIS a joke. Iv'e watched every game. Excellent ball handler? He's 3rd. on the team in turnovers, and he doesn't handle the ball that much. He made some steps but has regressed during the season.

McCabe gives 110% at all times. He makes alot of hustle plays that don't show up in the stat book but can change the momentum.

Um... why would you have to be "rated" to be "underrated"? Where are these rating of players I can look up to be sure the player I am talking about is on the list, so we can talk about him.

Underrated means people underestimate that person's talent. Doesn't get talked about much. Someone who's game deserves more respect.

Both McCabe and Stubbs fit into this conversation. Stubbs isn't an All-Big Ten player, but he is one of the best bench players ever and is a terrific scout team player. Guys like that can help your team SO MUCH and they never get any credit... which is EXACTLY what it means to be underrated.

LOL

From somebody who used Fran's positive off season comments about Brommer as an example of why you need to take Fran's comments about players with a grain of salt and also started the McCabe underrated discussion,

I must agree:)

The statement was that he was a good ball handler for his size. Which he is. When you compare him to the majority of our bigs, I would say he is is an above average ball handler for his position. Would you disagree?

I think McCabe is rated pretty accurately (whatever that rating system is). He's a decent player talent wise who gives excellent effort and hustle. He has moments of brilliance on offense and he has moments of terrible play on offense. He plays solid defense but sometimes the hustle and effort lead him to overplay and leads to a lot of his foul problems. He's not tall enough to be a shot blocker at his position but is great at taking charges to make up for that.

I like this conversation, re: underrated players. I agree that McCabe is rated just about right. Some people underestimate him, while quite a few over estimate him. He's our fifth best player.

The guy who I think is consistently underestimated, because of his obvious sophomore slump, is Melsahn Basabe. There has been a common attitude among fans this year - especially in the second half of the season - that Mel is no good. It's silly. Mel does a lot of things off the ball; defensively, setting screens, boxing out, etc. He is our fourth best player, after Gatens, Marble and White, yet folks tend to marginalize him based on him not meeting expectations.

I look for Mel to prove a lot of people wrong next year.

I do all of this in one game, which leads me to believe he's inconsistent.
