So why was Flemming not redshirted?

Watching the game last night, I was thinking about Flemming, and I guess even Williams as well.

Moss & Hutton still have 4 years to play.

Flemming and Williams are about getting the same minutes, but wasted this year, and now only have 3 to play.

I guess I would be a bit miffed about wasting a year if I were one of them?

I know you couldn't redshirt all stinkin 4 of em, but still.

Redshirting in basketball is different than football. 99% of the players are more upset if you REDSHIRT them.

With a program that is improving each year, I would think our recruiting will improve each year as well. I am not anxious to hold on to every recruit we bring in for five years. If a big guy needs time to mature and develop, so be it, but Fleming is physically mature and not the prototypical red shirt candidate. I have no problem with Fran's approach on this one.

FYI, this link may provide some background on why no redshirt for Mr. Fleming:

Also, redshirting a kid keeps his scholarship in the program a year longer. There are situations where you don't redshirt a kid because you only want him around for 4 years. I'm not saying that is the case with Fleming, I really don't know. However, what he has shown so far is he is not a PG and doesn't have ball skills or quickness to play OG.

I think Fran desperately needed to spread the eligibility of his players out, and it came at the expense of Flemming and Williams.

Going into next year, Iowa will have 4 Sophs (Ellingson, Flemming, Williams, Wagner), and SIX Freshman (Moss, Hutton, Cook, Bohannon, Pemsl, Kriener). Fran will probably redshirt 1 or 2 guys next year too, but had Fran redshirted Flemming, then you'd be looking at 7 freshman next year....out of 13 scholarships. Its just way too much of a glut.

On top of all of that, Fran has said he wants to grant Baer a Scholarship as well, and Baer is only a Freshman by eligibility (Soph next year).

Its almost a negative thing for Fran at this point, IMO. The recent success of Iowa should give Fran some credibility with players and allow him to land some higher recruits. But right now because of the massive glut of young kids, there just aren't any schollies to go around

Makes me nervous typing this but I don't believe we've had a single guy miss 1 game due to injury.

I know Mike had a hamstring and I think Clemmons had a stinger early in the big 10 season but other than that, we've had 0 injuries.

Jok missed one with an ankle, and I don't believe you typed this either. Actually please delete your post, so it no longer exists.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!

Jok missed most of the second half of ISU with an eye injury. The way he was shooting that game pretty much guarantees we have 1 loss we can chalk up to injury.

Dale Jones disagrees but I get your point.

I think it was a numbers game as much as trying to pick which of those in that class were "ready" They had to stagger the schollys up. So how they decided on who was going to ride the bench this year in a uniform or street clothes I don't know. But I just hope it works out down the road. In the end I think Iowa will be better off for having Fleming and Williams not redshirt. Now will either or both of them be better off that'll remain to be seen.

It's pretty out of the ordinary to red-shirt two guys a year in basketball, let alone three or four. Just wouldn't make sense for the program to do it.

I agree. Hutton needed work on his offensive game. I think we will be happy with what we see next year...no inside information just a guess. Moss was struggling with academics. So giving him a year to adjust to college made sense. Again...I think we will be happy with what we see next year.

Me too. Not sure if Moss and Hutton are going to get more PT than Fleming and Ellingson but I'd say there's a decent chance.

We miss Jones and his 46% from 3 point land. If we had him, along with Jok and Uthoff, it would be next to impossible to guard us. The middle would be wide open. We would be one heck of a team. Still are. But an experienced 6-8 player, with a consistent outside shot would put us over the top, in my opinion.

Hope Dale is recovering well and comes back strong next year. We will need him.

I could not agree more. I think he was a HUGE loss for us. A 6-8 kid who can shoot and rebound. If woodbury gets in foul trouble, we are very, very thin on the front line. I really am very concerned about our ability to go anywhere in the tournament. i don't care if we win the big ten, I just could easily see us being a 1 0r 2 and done team in the tournament. That being said, we have had a very good year to this point. much better than I ever dreamed of.
