So why was Flemming not redshirted?

I'm not convinced Dale was going to be that big of an asset. For every 3 he hit, he probably would take 1 out of offensive rhythm and his D would have hurt.

Curious question, other than Baer, who has been the last hawkeye that was redshirted, then came out his freshman year and really wowed people.

Usually, redshirt freshman who you see play their year after redshirting remind you WHY they were redshirted!

Watching the game last night, I was thinking about Flemming, and I guess even Williams as well.

Moss & Hutton still have 4 years to play.

Flemming and Williams are about getting the same minutes, but wasted this year, and now only have 3 to play.

I guess I would be a bit miffed about wasting a year if I were one of them?

I know you couldn't redshirt all stinkin 4 of em, but still.

I heard from a very reliable source close to the program that he wanted to redshirt, but Coker told him he couldn't.

Who were the last 10 Iowa players to RS? Your question references an extremely small sample size. Moss and Hutton (like Baer) were ready to contribute IMO. But it was a numbers game. Moss could be where Jok was as a sophomore. Could be. Hutton may be the lock down defender to help with the loss of Clemmons. May be? I'm not going to assume a kid can't play just because he took a RS.

Edit - The title of this thread would then be "So why didn't we RS Flemming, Moss and Hutton?" And think what Olaseni would have done with a 5th year.

Well moss was a bit unique because he had academic complications and got to campus later than everyone else. So he had a later start.

Adding to that...Fran says moss is going to be special but there aren't a ton of guard minutes to go around this year but there will be a bunch next year.

So add both of those up and it made sense to redshirt him if he was willing.

Iowa normally doesn't recruit well enough to have a deep enough team to redshirt players. Fran has been bringing in a lot of good players the last few years so we didn't really need freshmen to contribute this year. Also the freshmen class was really big so it made sense to redshirt a couple.

I can see how one would think since Fleming hasn't contributed and he was ahead of Moss, Moss must not be very good. If Moss wouldn't have arrived late, I would be afraid of that too. But since he did, there is hope that he is as good as his rankings and his highlight tape say he is.

Yeah I agree. I think moss was redshirted because he is better than Fleming. It sounds weird at first but makes sense if you think about it. Fleming is basically burning a year of eligibility

Fran also has to stagger the classes so you don't have too many scholarships eaten up by one class. My hope is that he sees the most upside in Hutton and Moss and we get them for the next four years. I would think maybe two of the incoming recruits for next year may be RS'd has well?

I still don't know why Fran isn't playing Fleming over Ellingson. Fleming was a stud at Oak Hill

I think he will eventually play more. I believe a lot has to do with knowing your defensive assignments. Mainly on help defense and rotations. I think Fleming will be a good player. Ellingson is further along with the mental part of assignments is what I believe is happening. Remember Jok didn't play much as a freshman until the end of the year. His offense was there, but defense wasn't.
