So who draws Evan Turner?

Obviously as pivotal as Turner is to Ohio State's offense and as much as he likes to penetrate, defending him has to be a team effort. However, who do you think draws that primary assigment?

Although he's inexperienced, I'm thinking May might get the first crack at it. That's something the kid could really take on as a personal challenge.

May as long as he can. No other real possiblities, but the sagging, switching defense will help.

Agree... I remember Matt having to guard Turner last year because Jake got into foul trouble and it was not pretty. Matt just struggled to stay with Turner.

I think May is the guy who has to guard Turner, with a lot of help defenes stepping up and taking charges/forcing Turner to pass the ball if he is able to get into the lane.

I am worried about controling Lauderdale as he is a big strong guy who could have a big day if OSU is able to penetrate and dish.

I do think May gets Evan Turner and Gatens probably Diebler? I am scared of what Diebler will do, he shoots 45% from 3's and has 138 3 ptA (29 more than Gatens). If we have to collapse on Turner leaviing Diebler open it could be a long day. Gatens being 6'5 can at least put a hand up against Diebler's 6'6 frame.

He won't help much on defense but this would be a good time for Bawinkel to rediscover his stroke and duplicate his performances against Ohio State from last season.

OSU presents matchup problems all over the place for Iowa.

Buford- 6'5'', great jumpshooter, but athletic enough to alley oop to....
Lighty- 6'5'', average jumpshooter, but even more athletic than Buford
Diebler- 6'6''. great jumpshooter, can run the floor, good athlete
Turner- 6'7'', good jumpshooter, handles the ball from the point, can penetrate, score in the paint, great passer, great rebounder.
Lauderdale-6'10'' ,bad jumpshooter, physical presence, average hands, good rebounder/shot blocker, can run the floor and finish in the paint

The obvious matchups:

Cole on Lauderdale
Payne on Diebler?

Tough calls:
May on Buford
Gatens on Lighty
Fuller on Turner

Or maybe Fuller on Lighty and Gatens on Buford and May on Turner?

I like Fuller in the paint and Turner is the guy besides Lauderdale that most often gets into the paint, usually off the dribble. Turner is just an ok jumpshooter from distance so, I see Fuller playing off of him out there, and if he knocks them down, go to plan B. But otherwise, make him drive, stay in front of him and stay on the ground...and do not let him push you around.

Tough call, but I think Fuller should try to take Turner.
We have no one that really can guard him,but Fuller would limit his paint effectiveness and make OSU try to win from the perimeter.

OSU is a really tough matchup for the Hawks. Really tough. This is a game where Archie would probably really help as well as Tucker but doubt we see him.

I love Aaron, but he would have a terrible time trying to stay with Turner. Also because Turner is playing the point, Aaron would be drawn away from the basket too much.

Wow, with those matchups if we keep this close it will be amazing. Definitely can't turn the ball over like we did against Indiana because OSU will make us pay way to much. Just not a game where Lickliter can get a lot of minutes because who can he guard?

Personally I would put May on Turner and hope his strength bothers him a little. Gatens on Lightly is a bad matchup but the best we have. I would play Fuller on Buford and Payne on Diegler. Actually after listing those I would just play a zone and hope that they are off on 3s.

Fuller is probably the best matchup for Turner..

not that anyone for Iowa (or in the conference) is a good matchup for Turner. As another poster pointed out, the trifecta of Lighty, Buford and Turner is a nightmare for teams to defend. But Fuller MIGHT give Turner some problems in just going into the lane and shooting over people. Oh and if you sag/help off any of those guys, then can throw it to Diebler, who shoots 45% from 3-land. Where Iowa is screwed is if any of Gatens/May/Fuller get in foul trouble. Then you are looking at Bawinkel/Lickliter trying to guard a really good perimeter player.

Payne is probably most-suited to guard Diebler as opposed to one of the other three. The problem is that Payne would spend the whole defensive possession chasing Diebler around screens and then be tasked with ball-handling responsibilities on offense.

No real good options or smoke and mirrors Iowa can try. Just have to play straight up as well as you can and hope that OSU misses some jump shots.

When Iowa has the ball, Cougill needs to be effective in his minutes and draw Lauderdale away from the basket. Lauderdale will have to go out to the 3-point line to get him.

I had no idea Diebler was 6'6". I think Cully still needs to guard him because he likes to stay on the outside. Cole/Lauderdale. Fuller/Buford. Gatens/Lighty. May/Turner.

I do like the idea of throwing in a zone because of the match-up problems. That could also be a bad idea if we don't find someone to box out to rebound. Still like the zone to mix it up for Ohio State. Evan Turner one on one is scary.

Turner is sneaky fast. He can change speeds very quickly. I hope May looks at this as an opportunity. It is a huge challenge.

He won't help much on defense but this would be a good time for Bawinkel to rediscover his stroke and duplicate his performances against Ohio State from last season.

If tOSU plays zone against Iowa again Thad Matta needs to have his head evaluated.

Again, cole on lauderdale and payne on diebler are the obvious matchups.

To me, Buford and turner are the two most dangerous all court guys on their team.
We need our quickest defender on Buford, who I think is may, and our strongest defender on Turner, who I say is Fuller or Gatens...so it comes down to maybe those two taking turns on Turner. Buford is a dangerous perimeter shooter and no way I want Fuller to have to chase him out there. Gatens/Fuller go vs Lighty/turner.

I went to the Wisconsin v. OSU game at the Kohl Center when I was back home during winter break and Ohio state looked terrible. Yes they didn't have Turner which was a big difference, but Diebler and Lauderdale did not impress me at all. Diebler couldn't hit a shot and Lauderdale was just overmatched. Wisconsin has a pretty good post presence with players like Nankavil.

If Iowa can play the kind of defense we played against Indiana and rebound the ball (which means put a body on someone!) then I think it will be interesting.

But defending Turner is going to be key.

JHHawk I hear what you are saying about Fuller. We don't have much of a good choice to who Fuller guards. It will be a mismatch for Ohio State. It will be Lighty or Buford. At least that is how I see it. May is our best athlete. Unless Turner starts posting May up then I can see your thinking in Fuller. From what I've seen Turner play this year he will get to the basket from his own dribble penetration. He is essentionally Ohio State's point guard. We need him to be off to win.

My point is that while Turner is a great athlete, he is also bigger and stronger than any of their other players and Eric May. Buford is really a true shooting guard and I do not think Fuller matches up well at all with his outside perimeter game and extreme quickness. So Lighty is the other guy I would consider putting Fuller on...still quicker than Fuller but at least he is more of a slasher to the paint guy rather than a shooter. I like fuller on Turner for one reason...when Turner does his patented drive to the hoop spin moves, at least Fuller can stay on the ground and bother him more than May and box him off the boards better than the smaller May. Turner is a great rebounder...we need meat on him to keep him outta the basket area. May would be my second choice, tho...so just a little friendly debate.
