So does anyone want to talk about

the metaphorical idiom of the 7 minute elephant in the room and finally getting the W in a close game?

Just curios.

Unfortunately, most people will discredit this because it wasn't against a "good" team. I agree though, it was awesome to see Mike put the game on ice. Big confidence builder now that it's March.

If it was a blowout over a good or bad team, still can't win a close one. If it's a close one against a bad team, still can't win a close one cause it shouldn't have been close. IL game wasn't close, Xavier, not close either. This team has won it's share of close games. They've also lost their share of close ones against good teams.

I dont think there was a Hawk fan that didnt think "here we go again" but they got the W and hopefully they put some of this stuff behind them. They are about to play in the biggest and what should be most enjoyable games of their careers.

Hopefully they arent thinking about games they lost or how fans acted or the media.

Although I think there is some validity to that (can the Hawks do it against a real opponent?), the team did respond when they fell behind and got the win. So maybe that's a good start towards having the confidence to do it against a better opponent.

I still can't help but be concerned by the fact that a 13 point halftime lead turned into a 4 point deficit at one point. Not being able to hang on to leads seem to be a recurring theme.

Yesterday's performance sure is not above criticism, even though it was a W. Gonna have to play better than that if they want have any luck in the tournaments coming up.

Purdue is terrible. /thread.

I disagree. I think Purdue is better than most realize. They were a lucky bounce away from beating the B1G regular season champions just a few days ago. Their center AJ Hammons is an absolute beast and was the best player on the floor for several minutes yesterday. Their guards are lightning quick and can drive and score - even against the zone. If they clean up their turnovers and play better defense they will make some noise next year. I was impressed with Purdue's effort and attitude on the road right after a heartbreaking loss.

Iowa's close wins this year; Ohio State, Xavier, Illinois, Penn State, Nebraska-Omaha, Purdue, Nebraska and Notre Dame

The issue people have is that only a couple of those teams are decent. Iowa has had chances against the best teams and can't finish them off. That's the issue, this win really doesn't do anything to change that.

There's enough data out there to concretely say that Purdue is decent at best (.500 team so they're not terrible but they sure aren't any good and terrible for a major conference team seems fairly accurate.) They aren't better than most realize unless that person is really stupid.

When Hammons shows up to play they are tough. That's about 50% of the time. We got them on a day he opted to play...making it a game.

my head is in the sand because I don't think the Hawks have issues with close games? They don't, they've won plenty. I actually think it's a fact that IOWA isn't the better team in most cases, and hence they lose. Tends to happen when you're NOT better than the other team more times then not. Iowa is the 4th or 5th best team in the conference and has a whole season of proof to show it.

Eh, possibly true but they've blown multiple basket leads in the last few minutes plenty of times in the last two years. That's a sign of either terrible luck or choking regardless of who they are playing (they aren't so much worse than most of these teams that they should be out played by so much in the last few minutes of a game in which you've outplayed the opponent by so much.)

Iowa made FT's in crunch time. Nice to see and hopefully will become the norm. Odds are that all Iowa's NCAA tourney games will be very close. Every FT will count.

Possibly true too, but it's a 40 minute game. It's no different in games were they trailed at points and found a way to win. The better team typically wins, and Iowa was not the better team in those 9 games or they would have won. Is that choking? Maybe, or again, it's probably cause they are good not great. This is essentially the same squad that missed the tourney last year and played well in the NIT. It didn't become national title material over night because it didn't add any thing of substance from last year besides maturity. We're a solid squad with tons of potential and good enough to dance. I for won appreciate that...

Our team has 2 major problems. We struggle in crunch time and we soften up on D when we get a lead. In all other aspects of the game we are one of the best teams in the country.

You can say we are streaky shooters or we have long scoring droughts but every other team can say that too. If we decide to keep playing defense when we get a lead and if we quit making mental mistakes late, we have just as good a chance to make the final 4 as anyone.

Come on, people. OP wants to discuss that McCabe only played 7 minutes and Iowa won with Gesell playing instead at crunch time. Is it related? I say YES, of course.

I'm pretty certain you just called me stupid.
