Smile, you're on candid camera... at Kinnick

I'm guessing that the check points will not be on public roads but at the entrance/exit of parking lots which makes all the difference. The 'saftey' check point thing holds no water as the U of I has stated that they will be looking for drunk drivers, clearly the intent is for it to be an OWI check point but the fact that it is on U of I property vs a public road makes that point moot.

Interesting. I will admit I like to toss a few back afterwards but that is because my wife is the DD. If I was a person who was ********* after the games and couldn't drive and I saw the "checkpoint" at the exit of the parking lot, I would just pack up my stuff and walk away. It's cheaper to pay to get my car out of impound than it is for an OWI charge. Plus you get enough people doing that it will create an inconvenience to the U to have them bring towing companies in to tow your car away.

Just so long as there is no funny stuff going on in the bathroom like in the Metrodome. That would be catastrophic. Hope their rightousness doesn't ruin the atmosphere needed to keep the home field advantage.

They have had the cameras for years. I worked security for Carver/Kinnick when I was in school. The cameras have a very powerfull zoom lens. I remember playing with them once on a non-game day. You could zoom into the UIHC rooms and read a patient chart if you wanted to.

Implementing something that runs counter to State law is pretty shaky business. I can see a lawsuit on the horizon if the U refuses to let someone leave a lot using a procedure that is illegal on public roads...and perhaps then tries to penalize them for not being out of the lot within 2 hours.

This could get interesting.

Did you sue the U of I? Where the security guys charged with perjury? Kinda seems like there was some willful and organized intent to knowingly send an innocent person to jail.

No. I did not sue the UofI even though there was an easy defamation of character and liable suit against the UofI and their employees. I plead guilty to unlawful assembly (simple misdemeanor) and moved on with my life. What I went through was total b.s. but in the end I looked back and said, "self" if you hadn't been drinking that day then none of this would have happened and I moved on.

What...you didn't realize you were living in a de facto police state already, for like the last what...30 years? 50 maybe?

Well, now you know.

not to derail this thread.....

it's easy to say this 'off the cuff'....but it is good to be able to make light of living in a 'police state'.....when there really are those out there.......i have a friend who is from Egypt (now living in IA) - a Christian (read:minority of minorities) from Egypt to boot - wow - he has some stories that would make you enjoy our 'police state'........

I was being facetious. Kind of.

with the amount of cell phone, security cameras, police cameras, etc; it really shouldn't shock anybody that you are being recorded nearly all the time you are in public.

This puts an asterisk on all those games where we used to bring in bottles of champagne for touchdowns, an "I" flag on an 8 foot sailboat mast, and even a keg in a wheelchair! (*= prior to big brother cameras). Seems to me a bit overkill by the university/city to crack down on everyone so hard. If they have the camera's and technology, they should be able to to do their jobs without putting everyone else in "safety" checkpoints and still crackdown on the problem people. (Are there really that many incidences that they had to change tailgating policy yet again? Or are they just trying to be politically correct?)

I certainly feel for what Hawkeye12345 went through. Part of college is growing up and learning from our lack of judgment in our youth. Ultimately, instant replay off the field is all we're talking about here.
