Earlier this week Matt on 1460 ****** me off to no end. He claimed that the SEC teams would have to much speed for Iowa to compete against. I did some research and found that since 1999, Iowa football program has 13 wins to 14 losses aganist non-conference BCS teams

Against the

SEC 3-1
Pac10 2-2
Big 12 6-10
Big East 2-1
ACC 0-0

In the 1999-2002 era, we were 1-8 with the one victory aganist Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl. All but one of the losses(USC) were to the Big 12 conference. They owned us but it was a time were the program was being rebuilt.

In the 2003-current era, including 2009, we are 12-6. 3 of these wins were against the power houses of the SEC that had speed that suppusedly we could not stay with. IMHO, in the 2006 Alamo Bowl, Andy Brodell's touch down proved that Iowa speed is match for some the upper echelon teams. This data is part of history but I find it that in some cases the Iowa football is program is not respected because of this history. If the pundits would do some research then "they" would see that history proves that the program is succesful and has the ability to compete with anyone. I say " Go to the Mattresses" and let the fun begin.

I didn't bother to post all the info due to lack of typing skills and 3 painfully annoying teens wanting some food.

You have to take into consideration that Iowa has never played the cream of the SEC crop in any of it's recent bowl games. LSU was the closest thing we've come to it and they had a lame duck coach and we pulled off a TD drive that probably would happen 1 in 20 times...

Look how Michigan carved us up on the ground this year with the speedy spread rushing attack. Arkansas State and Iowa State were able to run the ball too.

I'd much rather play Alabama if we are fortunate enough to make the title game. I'd still worry about Alabama's overall team speed. But Florida.... Florida would be a whole different ball of wax.

It's no secret and the proof is in the pudding. Solid spread rushing attacks have been known to do much better on the ground against Norm Parker than traditional smash mouth.

You take FL's speed with a similar to Michigan type offense and a Tim Tebow and I think anyone who says Iowa would have trouble with SEC cream of the crop speed is spot on.

But we dominated that game for the first 3 quarters...our defense was slowly suffocating them until Offthemarcus Russell came into the game.

Alabama's offensive team speed doesn't scare me as much, plus their running game is more geared to what we are excellent at stopping, so that would be our best matchup, I agree. I think that a matchup with Florida would be challenging, but I'm not sure that you are giving these Hawkeyes enough credit. Just because the pundits say we're slow doesn't make it so...we definitely have some speed on our defense. I think it would be a great matchup of great speed vs. a great, disciplined defense.

There are quite a few differences between the Michigan spread and the Florida offense...the use of a TE/H-back for one. Florida has been running with a lot more power this year...they are about as close to a power spread as you can get. But you are right...they certainly have speed coming out the wazoo, but as I mentioned before, disciplined defenses can contain speed.
