last few words... "He's a legend and he brought this program to where it is today..."

No...

Today it is is a place that is not so good and on average Fry's teams played at a higher level that the recent KF teams.

Right now today where it is is worse.

Would Fry's last 4 teams beat Ferentz's last 4?

You're really confusing the sh!t outta me here. you know those last few words were about Fry not Ferentz, correct?

A legacy is yet to be written and the next few years will determine the difference between a very good and respected coach or one of the all time greatest coaches in school history....... time will tell. Either result is very good. A national championship or a few more BCS type bowl wins could nail that down and so could several more 6-6 seasons. As far as both coaches are concerned I have a lot of respect and admiration for both of them barring any unforeseen behavior or revelations.

While Fry had higher highs, he also had lower lows. The Big 10 is now better, top to bottom, than it was in the 80's too. Back then, Northwestern having a winning record was absurd, and Wisconsin going to Rose Bowls was preposterous.

On the flipside, there was no 85 scholarship limit, so the big programs could stockpile top players. Television was pretty much regional, so recruiting outside your region was much more difficult.
