Siena recruit Bryon Allen has committed to GM

If we add a freshman, it gives us 5 in that class. If we add a JUCO player, assuming he's coming in as a Junior, that gives us 5 in that class as well.

The big difference is that a Junior would give us 5 recruits in what will be Coach Fran's first big class in 2012. That's the first class that he'll have considerable time to really recruit the class and be on even ground with everyone as far as time goes. We'll also be able to show that class a years worth of play and what his style is going to be. The big plus is that will be our first year actually using the new practice facility.

Valid points, i would much rather have a juco player.

I thought this kid sounded like a real stud, who could have filled a big hole for us,but I suppose it was a bit too much to expect Fran to bring talent with him like Calipari did to Ky last year.
It would have been an impressive get tho,and certainly would have fired me up with a display of salesmanship....oh well.

I just wonder how picked over the juco ranks are by now?
Last two coaching changes SA: brought in Rob Griffin and Joe Fermino,
and then: Jeff Peterson for lick.
None of them stood the test of time, altho I do think Peterson would have helped us if lick had not driven him away with his management style.

I was hoping that for once,we might actually get some talent with a new coach...imagine if Howard had come with Lick.
Now, maybe Fran has some other irons in the fire out east altho it sounds like Allen was his focus. First big miss of the Fran era? time will tell..but if he was offered by Huggy Bear,he could start at Iowa.

2012 also has a great crop in Iowa!

A great 2012 crop including, in particular, Marcus Paige. Adding a high school PG now could have an impact on what Paige would see for available PT.

Another good point of Fran's style of play (this is my new buzz phrase: out with "system," in with "style of play") is that he'll play 9 or 10 guys regularly, as he said in the PC today. That should help some with recruiting scenarios like this one.

That also should play into it as well. Who knows, maybe a lot of the people here will be happy and get Kaylon afterall. That would give us depth at pg and give us a valuable scholly for that 2012.

I'll go along with that. If I never hear the word "system" again as long as I live, that will be fine by me. I guess if you're running, you'll need to have a deeper bench so you can have chances to give your starters a rest more often. Probably much like the Davis system (oops, there's that word again), he substituted alot and played several players.

I would also think more playing time for the bench will help to develop them more instead of sitting on your hands getting 2 minutes per game.

I would not be surprised if Iowa did not sign anyone this spring. The signing periods starts in a little over two weeks on April 14th and ends on May 19th.

The new coach has a lot on his platter right now. Meeting with current players, assembling a staff, evaluating the existing players to determine need and re-recruiting the incoming signees.

Unless McCaffery has been recruiting someone to Siena who he feels can play at the Big Ten level it would not upset me if he doesn't bring in another player.

Columbus, you could be right, but it's been a while since Iowa fans were exposed to a coach well connected and aggressive enough to be able to find a good guard in the Spring (throught he normal route rather than having him drop out of the sky like Cully). A good staff can do that, and it's not all that uncommon that a need to do so crops up late.

Plus, Freddy, a dead period starts at noon on Thursday and goes until noon the following Thursday. Also, the dead period starts again on April 12th and goes through the second day of the signing period.

Cal brought in Bledsoe,Wall and Cousins to Ky after he was hired in late April.
They are all slated to be lottery picks in June if they go NBA draft.
Is it asking too much for Iowa to find a single decent guard in April....?

Two differences Fran faces, he isnt Calapari, and iowa isnt kentucky. Wall was already considering memphis. Cousins and bledsoe probably jumped on the band wagon.
