SI college sports crime...Iowa 2nd

That was my thought as well. The way the story starts, you would think they're talking about felons playing football. I'm not sure what point they're trying to make with that table showing the preseason rank.

I believe they're trying to prove that the top programs get there, by compromising integrity.

I wonder how many are simple alcohol offenses (public intox or MIP type stuff).
There is no doubt that most were paulas or disorderly conduct at 1:30 AM. They lead with Pittsburg where the arrests were violent crimes and try to paint every school on the list with that same brush. We all know, at least on this board, almost every arrest made in the last 10 years or more. The vast majority of arrests were college kids drinking. I think they would have had more credibility if they would have listed the infractions for all to see. BS story!!

Exactly.

One of my facebook friends who is a Sker fan put that up this morning with a note about worrying about "crime" in Iowa City.
I've been drunk in public in Lincoln and a chick flash me with cops around me and I got nothing except an eyeful and a pat on the back. In Iowa City, they might reinstate the death penalty for that. Comparing the cops in Lincoln vs the one's in Iowa City is like comparing Enos and Sheriff Roscoe P Coltrane to the Nazi gustapo.

Is a crime not a crime? Some of you just wont give it up. To say IC cops "are just out to get football players" or "its just a PAULA", is rediculous. WHy are underage football players drinking? If you are 6'5" and weigh 250 lbs, yeah you are going to stand out in a crowd, SO DONT DRINK IN PUBLIC!

This.

I'll agree with others that many of these arrests are for things like PAULAs, but that doesn't change the fact that these guys are breaking the law. It shouldn't matter if cops in Iowa City are more strict than cops elsewhere. Breaking the law is breaking the law.

Nobody is arguing that the players shouldn't be arrested for committing crimes (at least I didn't see any post that did, but I was just skimming).

What folks are saying is that: (1) the comparison between schools is worthless because community policing varies from school to school and, depending on location, a particular violation of the law is (a) more likley to be discovered, and/or (b) more likely to be prosecuted; and (2) lumping all crimes in one big pot (# of arrests), regardless of severity or variety, muddies the water when trying to draw conclusions regarding team/program character and/or community safety based upon the data provided. (I would feel a lot worse about Iowa football if they had 18 arrests for murder than 18 arrests for PAULA--wouldn't you?)

Folks are being critical of the article, its presentation of "statistics", and its "spin", not the Iowa City Police Department.

For those of you who think that the kids at Iowa are the only ones who drink in public or think they are the only ones "acting poorly enough to get caught", are way too naive. I went to 2 different colleges, CSU and Iowa. CSU bars were even 21+ at the time, and cops saw the underage players wander in there all the time....get drunk....and leave. They didn't do anything. I'm not saying every college is like that, but to say Iowa has a "problem" is ridiculous. And for those of you that say "don't get drunk in public"....LOL. So I guess those kids at TCU are getting drunk with a few buddies in their apt/dorm and not going out to parties, trying to pick up girls....etc, etc, etc. They ALL are.

Also, Iowa City life in general is leaps and bounds different than what would be experienced in most of the other cities listed.

I think if Iowa City and the University of Iowa really wanted to clean up the town, They would do it. Whether it be suspending students or even dismissing students and faculty for repeated arrest offenses, to levying larger fines against alcohol related convictions, by going after the bars that serves minors. Unfortunately, that all will drive down revenues and tax money and no government or business is going to allow that unless there are ways to make more money from a different revenue stream.

You'd have a point if that was actually in the post you quoted.

It looks like it is.

Who cares about the article? It's something to bring up discussion during the offseason. Once the season starts, nobody cares who had players arrested in the offseason.

So is it going to be Pitt vs Iowa in the McGruff Crime Bowl?

Not to minimize "crime", but if a lot of municipalities had there way they would find a way to make everything a crime. Case in point. My neighbor drives a 2006 Cambry. His headlight lens were fogged over like most Toyotas do after a few years. He was pulled over and given a ticket for $258 for having the fogged lights. That county was upside down as most are and they recently decided that if they can write tickets for tinted windows that are too dark, why not headlight lens that don't give out enough light. From a practical matter, they are probably right in terms of safety but my point is its now a CRIME not to have clean headlight lens. Its a crime to J-walk even if there is no car within a mile, in Alabama it is a crime to drive barefoot, in Alaska its legal to shot a bear, but its a crime to wake a bear in order to shoot a picture, in Arizona it is illegal for more than 6 girls to live in one house, a crime in Colorado is any car dealer that shows cars on sunday, in Florida its illegal to have sex with a porcupine, also in Florida if you tye your elephant to a parking meter you have to put money in the meter or its a CRIME, in Georgia it is illegal to spit from a car or a bus but not a truck, in Honolulu its a crime to annoy the birds in the park, there is a state law in Illinois that all bachelors need to be called Master instead of Mister when addressed by females, spiteful gossip is a crime in Indiana, in South Bend it is illegal to let your monkey smoke a cigarette, in Kansas it a crime to hunt whales, in Kentucky its a crime to transport an ice cream cone in your pocket, in Louisiana its a crime to gargle in public, in Baltimore is a crime to mistreat oysters, OK, Ok, I could go on and on, when you say a crime is a crime, give me a break. If we didn't live in a country of sheep, half the laws would be repelled. I love people that love to protect us from ourselves by making pretty much anything they don't agree with a crime. Oh by the way, there is an old ordinance on the books in Louisiana that states it is illegal to wear a goatee if you haven't paid the fee for a permit to wear one. ITS A CRIME!!!!!
