Should Big Ten Title Game Be Outdoors?

If it's in the afternoon (which I think conference rules dictate for a game that late in the year), by all means, make it outdoors and make a statement. If it is a prime time affair, yeah, it needs to be inside.

The game should be played outdoors. It will be played 2 weeks later than the last game of the season is now played. That's still late fall, not the dead of winter depicted in some of the posts in this thread.

Exactly...no chance of bad weather in late fall...:p

I think he's saying that that the weather in the first week of December can't be that much different than the last week of December. To read some of the posts here, you'd think this game was scheduled for the middle of January.

I think that all this talk about the weather and/or public perception of the league is overblown. Jim Delaney doesn't exactly come off as the kind of guy who gives a damn if other people are critical of him. If that were the case, Nebraska would probably still be in the Big 12.

It seems like the worst part of our last few winters has been in the first or second week of December, lots of snow and lots of cold, play the game indoors.

1) There is no such rule, that is a myth amongst the fans.

2) If a primetime slot is open for tv the Big Ten would jump all over that even if the game was outdoors.

An outdoor December game in prime time makes no sense. It could be sub zero temps. and snowing during game time. It wouldn't be much fun for the fans and I'm sure the players would feel the low temps.

That said, I think the championship game should be played indoors, especially during prime time. A game of this magnitude will almost certainly be played in prime time.

Tell that to the Packers, Bears, Steelers, and Patriots. Hell, they are still playing outdoors in January, 6 weeks after this hypothetical B10 title game (albeit, not in prime time like you noted).

Now, I am not a huge proponent of holding it outdoors, at least not every year and am totally fine with Indy. I would like to see it outdoors on rotating schedule with indoors.

Cincinnati

Why don't I see them campaigning to host the game? Surely they would be a better choice than Cleveland, Green Bay, Minneapolis

The Giants and Packers had a 7 PM kick in 2008 for the NFC championship, and the temperature was -4.

There is a reason why the only team that played in a dome in the Big Ten, doesn't anymore. Think about it.

If they make this a permanent game indoors in one stadium, particularly Indy, I will puke.

Let's just make this thing as freaking sterile as we can, huh Jon?

This is the Big Ten! I was not opposed to the idea of a championship game, but I would be if this was the result. The fear of an inclement weather game should not take the heart and soul out of the Big Ten experience for the Championship game.

We are a league that enjoys the color of our different locations and the varying weather of our games. How can you even consider losing that? Seems like a media guy that is more worried about being comfortable than experiencing the true magic of the Big Ten experience.

However, I can compromize. How about rotating Indy, Soldier Field, Cleveland, Ford Field, inside/outside on alternate years? Heck, when the Vikings build their new stadium, let Minny in the mix.

I'll bring this next point up again.....the SEC plays its champ game indoors. The XII now plays its champ game indoors. Both leagues play all other games outdoors.

That's no accident.

There are other reasons why Minney went back to an on-campus venue. I also think the twins playing outdoors is silly...what's going to happen if they make a late October/early November WS?

Finally, if you want "outdoors" Lucas Oil Stadium has a retractable roof.

I don't believe anyone has said this. But my grand idea is to host the first ever one at WRIGLEY FIELD!!! Can you imagine a classic big ten battle set on one of the most historic sporting venues in the world? There would be huge hype just because of the venue alone. Yes, tickets would be hard to come by and perhaps limited. But TV viewership would rise just to see a game at Wrigley and imagine all the rooftops full of black and gold! No one watches hockey, but yet many of us checked out the game at Wrigley 2 years ago just to see what it looked like I bet right?

It is NOT about it being outdoors per se, it is about making the thing sterile. We need to have a rotating game where we get to go to different cities. Indy sucks. It is OKAY every few years, but every freaking year! No Way!

Heck, Hawk fans are even getting sick with going to Florida every January. Think about it.

Oh yeah, and I know Indy sucks because my in-laws lived there for 10 years. After like the third time going, we just ended up staying at the house the whole time.

Finally, they have friends that have been Colts season ticket holders for 20 years. Even they think Lucus is sterile.

The SEC, the best FB league in America, has played its championship game in the same place, the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, every year since 1994 (it was played outdoors at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama for 2 years until a nasty rain storm ruined the game in 1993).

Sterile? Probably.
Same location? Yes.
Gone stale? Hardly.

No brainer....begin and sustain this thing at Lucas Oil Stadium.

P.S. How many years did Iowa highschool wrestling for example hold its state wrestling tournament at crappy Vet's auditorium? (You could have held it at the UNI dome, Iowa City CHA, ISU, rotated it, on and on.....)

No, they kept it at the very same location because of its central state location, walk-up fan interest, they knew how to hold the event, and "the barn" was the mecca of wrestling...that mystical/magical place where all eyes focused upon come March. TRADITION.

I'll add these arguments for beginning and sustaining the game at Lucas Oil Stadium....build TRADITION.
