NOTE: When Kirk said "We are counting on it" earlier this week asking if Shonn was coming back, I figured this was coming...will be interesting to hear the ovation he gets after hearing the roar for Greenway

IOWA CITY, IA – Former University of Iowa consensus all-America running back Shonn Greene has been named honorary captain for Saturday’s game against Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes face the Badgers in an ABC/ESPN televised game with kickoff set for 2:36 p.m., in Kinnick Stadium. The game is sold out, which means Iowa has sold out 47 of its last 49 home games.
Greene was named winner of the 2008 Doak Walker Award, which goes to the nation’s top collegiate running back. He was only the second running back in Iowa history (Nile Kinnick) to gain consensus all-America honors.
Following the 2008 season he was also named winner of the Chicago Tribune Silver Football, emblematic of the league’s most-valuable player. He was named a co-captain and MVP following his final season (2008).
Greene holds the Iowa records for yards rushing in a season (1,850) and rushing touchdowns (20) in a season. The last time Iowa played Wisconsin in Kinnick Stadium (a 38-16 win) Greene scored four rushing touchdowns, which tied the Iowa record. He ranks ninth on the all-time Iowa rushing yardage list (2,228 yds), despite playing only one full season. He did letter three times (2005-06-08).
He was drafted in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft by the New York Jets and continues to play an important part in their success.
Greene will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin-flip. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game and on the sidelines during the contest.

I must say, I think Kirk & Co. are being very strategic by picking these recent players to be honorary captain. The honorary captain talks to the team after practice on Friday and can provide great inspiration. Humpal, Greenway, Greene are the last 3. Good stuff. Go Hawks!

The strategy involved is when these guys have NFL bye weeks :)

Place will go crazy. But, the biggest pops would have to come from....
1. Time Dwight
2. Greenway and Hodge together
3. Chuck Long (maybe one day)

Thanks, Mr. Obvious. However, the team could go in any number of directions when choosing the honorary captain...Booster, Celebrity, Former Football Player, Former Iowa Letterwinner, etc. and yet they have focused on recent players in the NFL to provide motivation and perspective.

It's always been former players who fill this role. Who else they gonna have, Ashton Kutcher or Tom Arnold? (see former celebrity option). And thus that is the NFL bye week coming into play.

Ironic for you to throw out the "Mr Obvious" jab. You congratulate Kirk & Co for being very strategic in selecting NFL players as honorary captains; there's nothing strategic at all, every freakin' BCS team does the same thing.

Shonn will be showered with a huge ovation..hopefully the only showers of the day at Kinnick.
This is very appropriate when you consider that game that Shonn had in 2008 vs the Badgers. One of the best days of his career(216 yrds,I believe) and included maybe his signature run of that Doak Walker winning season....the break tackle, spin and break more tackle td run that defied nature....lets go hawks, beat Badgers...

Shonn Greene being the honoray captain this week is purely coincidence.........if the Jets weren't on a bye then he wouldn't be here. Whatever other NFL team that is on bye that has a former Hawk on the roster would be inserted into said role for this week.

speaking of capt. obvious. surprisingly enough, i've not gotten a call from Coach Ferentz to be an honorary captain. Graduate and booster. damn.

It's fitting we were able to get Greene for the Wisconsin game, where he had arguably his best day as a Hawk.

I love this new "tradition". It ties the program together... salutes great Hawkeyes of the past...and spotlights the success KFz's players have in the NFL.

And the FANS love it!
