NOTE: When Kirk said "We are counting on it" earlier this week asking if Shonn was coming back, I figured this was coming...will be interesting to hear the ovation he gets after hearing the roar for Greenway
IOWA CITY, IA – Former University of Iowa consensus all-America running back Shonn Greene has been named honorary captain for Saturday’s game against Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes face the Badgers in an ABC/ESPN televised game with kickoff set for 2:36 p.m., in Kinnick Stadium. The game is sold out, which means Iowa has sold out 47 of its last 49 home games.
Greene was named winner of the 2008 Doak Walker Award, which goes to the nation’s top collegiate running back. He was only the second running back in Iowa history (Nile Kinnick) to gain consensus all-America honors.
Following the 2008 season he was also named winner of the Chicago Tribune Silver Football, emblematic of the league’s most-valuable player. He was named a co-captain and MVP following his final season (2008).
Greene holds the Iowa records for yards rushing in a season (1,850) and rushing touchdowns (20) in a season. The last time Iowa played Wisconsin in Kinnick Stadium (a 38-16 win) Greene scored four rushing touchdowns, which tied the Iowa record. He ranks ninth on the all-time Iowa rushing yardage list (2,228 yds), despite playing only one full season. He did letter three times (2005-06-08).
He was drafted in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft by the New York Jets and continues to play an important part in their success.
Greene will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin-flip. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game and on the sidelines during the contest.
