Shimonek & DW

Actually, it was Texas Tech's defense that showed up to work today. They had their best scoreline in YEARS. I looked it up, they held two opponents under 11 points in 2013 and had not done it again until today.

Good for DW. Happy that he can function as a college WR without KMM out there explaining what he supposed to do at the line of scrimmage

Seriously, DW was a FR. Rarely does a FR not need instruction. This narrative that somehow DW is too dumb to block is ridiculous. He is a hugely talented kid that got frustration with kirk's penchant for player the less talented WR's that can block the best. There is zero question we could have used DW the past 2 seasons.

As for NS, good for him. He saw the numbers and didn't want to sit. No hard feelings, either way. But he sure is talented.

DW was actually a decent and willing blocker. He just didn't know the playbook and therefore didn't know the routes he was supposed to run. The Purdue game in 2014 was a good example of it. Had some decent blocks but didn't have a clue what to do near the goal line and cost Iowa a shot a TD

I would argue we were better off the last 2 years without DW. Attitude was clearly an issue.

That said, we could have definately used a kid with his talent with a good attitude.

Also, which WR that was playing ahead of him was a worse player than him?

Curious who was on the team with Willies that was less talented? KMM was better, Tevaun Smith was better, MVB was better, Damond Powell was better at what his role was (and couldn't block either), and DW was ahead of McCarron and DMX. McCarron turned out to be better also, and DMX switched positions. Now they may all be better blockers than him but they were also better at actually catching footballs and producing on the field than him. Willies was about the sixth best receiver on his team last year too at TTech. He is what he is, about the fourth best receiver on any power 5 conference team. Luckily he plays on a team that starts 4 receivers and the number one guy from last year transferred so he got the fourth spot. The only success he has to show for four years of college football is as a JUCO that already had two years of D1 training under his belt. Otherwise he's done nothing of note. A winning TD vs Ball State is his biggest accomplishment .

Willies problem was understanding what do do when he was on the field. You can't play someone when it's their responsibility to read the defense, the play call, and determine what his route is...and it's constant failure. From what i've heard, he screwed up all the time and that's why they didn't have confidence playing him. It had nothing to do with talent, it was his understanding of the scheme and playbook.

Now, if you want to talk about why Greg Davis was running this style of offense where so much is determined at the line of scrimmage...we can talk. I'm thinking you should be able to simplify it to allow your best talent to play...at least for certain formations trying to get him in man match ups...where the routes are limited.

Well it only took to their RS Sr. years to actually do something in football.

Was just Ferentz keeping them down Dean.

Wait, isn't that the entire reason we have this thread, to show how much we don't play talent.

I wish Nic well, kid is lighting it up. Heck, good for Willies too I guess. But a Texas Tech qb putting up video game numbers has been going on for like 20 years.

Screw it...lets go Air Raid Hawks!

It looks like Tech has arranged its offense with DW always lined up to the left sideline, like really close to the sideline to spread the field like Baylor aligns in past years. The thing is Shimonek is a right handed guy who looks right first on most downs when he gets into his stance.

Looking at the game, its clear they are trying to get the ball to Keke Coutee in the slot and over the middle, he is short and sleek and cuts like their best receivers from past years. DW having the fourth most catches sounds like he is the last guy in the pass progression of most plays, and moves guys out of zones to free up space for the slot guys or make blocks on the edge for sweep plays.
