Settles, Murray

Maybe it's just me, maybe it's just wishful thinking but Murray and Settles seemed to be pretty smitten with Fran and the game he is bringing to the Iowa basketball program. I sat wondering if they might be potential asst. coaches. Anyone know what these guys are doing right now and if either of them are interested in the jobs (or maybe have been offered already?)? Seems like they would be two very valuable men to have helping out in practices and in the daily lives of players.

Murray has been working for the Big Ten Network. From his quotes in the paper today, I'd say he is putting himself out there for an assistant role. No clue about Settles.

Settles is a high school basketball coach in iowa, not sure what team. I am assuming that he must be teaching as well??

Settles spent the past 5 years or so working as a pharmaceutical rep in Iowa. He is a great teacher type, very good one on one with people, and a very caring individual. Most recently he served as an assistant coach at Mt. Pleasant ending the season in the semi-finals at the state tournament. I could think of no other better person to add to the staff to help establish a link to the Iowa legacy. From Iowa, Star at Iowa, Exceptional character.

Acutally seems like a no-brainer to me.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Settles was involved with the NBA in some sort of scouting position after his playing days. I can't remember what team, but I am almost postive of this. I remembering seeing him at an exhibition game at the Mark in the Quad Cities some time ago. If anyone else can confrim this I would appreciate it.

Thanks! Go Fran!

I think Jess would be a great feel good story, but we need guys that can get it done via recruiting. Not sure coaching small school Iowa/pharm rep is going to work when relating to the kids we will be going after.

Hawk4Life,

I hear what you are saying. However, it is the ability to develop a relationship that is good for recruiting, mentoring, and coaching for both basketball and life that is so important today. That is what set Tom Davis apart. He cared about his young men both on and off the court.

This is where Settles could be a nice fit. Although he does not have much formal coaching experience, I could see him joining the staff for less than average pay and growing with the rejuvenated program.

We'll know soon enough. The great thing is to see a good contingent of former players supporting the program. That right there makes all the difference in the world and sends a good message to hawkeye fans across the state.

Made me even consider buying season tickets to see the program turnaround with my son.

I feel a lot better after this press conference. If Murray and Settles endorse him then I endorse him. Those are two great former Hawks to be behind you!

I said this earlier as well, but I think Greg Stokes is worth a look. He's currently an assistant coach at Kirkwood. I don't know much about his recruiting connections and the like, but I did e-mail Barta and suggested that it may be worth looking into. Getting Stokes would likely improve our chances of bringing in Kaylon Williams, which would give us much needed depth at PG. It also wouldn't hurt Coach Bluder's efforts to land Stokes' daughter Kiah, who is a prized recruit in the 2011 class with offers from both Tennessee and UCONN.

Murray and or KEvin Gamble would be great choices. I really hope he brings on a former player. D. Manning has worked out nicely for Kansas.

That case is probably a little different lol. I only ever liked Kansas when Collison and Hinrich were there. I didn't pay attention before then, and haven't liked them since. But EVERYONE knows who Danny Manning is lol.
