Seth Davis Critiques UI Basketball Program

Spank: Purdue featured Carl Landry on that team....still a starter in the NBA,and much better than any Iowa player.

Tate was hurt that season,right?
That was a good coaching job. Iowa was picked for bottom tier.
As for facilities,BB promised stuff and never came thru. Only Iowa,NW and Minny did not have separate practice facilities in the league.

Seth Davis is a d-bag,and this was a very flawed analysis.
Lick was a much worse director of our bb operations that SA,but clearly, if one wants to generate traffic on message boards just put a noun, verb and SA in a sentence, and 7 page threads appear. Most polarizing figure in Iowa sports history,by far....with lick, almost everyone agrees...he sucked.

It wasn't until the last season when I has seen enough. I wasn't onboard like some of you guys.

Then again, I also thought Lickliter could be given one more season.

This is why I am not an A.D. :)

I actually felt bad for Lick. He WAS, after all, dealing with a serious health issue that season.

Not that I had any confidence he was going to turn it around. The wheels absolutely fell OFF his last several games. He lost the team...continually. Say what one will about DL or RB defections over the past few seasons, but at least KF can put a 6-/7-/8-win team on the field. Every defection Lick had seemed--INSTANTLY--to be easily translated into, "Welp, that's another 2-to-4-game swing in the win-loss column..."

I still say Lick might have survived if Tyler Smith had stayed. Not sure I will ever be able to forgive Smith or Pearl for that, which made it somewhat gratifying when Pearl got unceremoniously CANNED at Tennessee.

Alford's last year was not great...

Again, my opinion, but finishing 4th is overstating. They were 9-7. That's the stat to look at. They lost 7 games in conference that year, a down year for the Big Ten. If they hadn't squeaked by MSU earlier in the year, they would have been .500 in conf. And 16-15 overall. Purdue and Illinois were also 9-7 in conf that year to tie Iowa for 4th (or 6th depending on how you look at) - yes I know Iowa got the 4 seed in the tourney that year, wherein they were waxed by the aforementioned Purdue team. They were one Big Ten loss away from being ahead of just Penn State, Minnesota, and NW that year.

but I don't get the denigrating of the 9-7 conference record either. Why is beating MSU somehow discounted by "squeaking" by them? Iowa wasn't all that good that year, but they did manage to finish above .500 in conference, which was a nice accomplishment.

I think his point is, that they should have finished better then 9-7. With the Big Ten being down and the talent they had 9-7 was a "disappointment"
