Set Plays

Fran has caught some heat in the past for not using timeouts at the end of the game. Well he didn't use one last night but how about the set they ran that resulted in a curl cut in the lane to Uthoff for an uncontested dunk. At the beginning of the possession Mike pulled it out and Fran absolutely called the play that sealed the deal and the team executed perfectly.

Picture perfect call and execution at crunch time deserves some Kudos and a thread!!

I'm not sure why people are so obsessed with thinking a D1 school needs to call a timeout to draw up a play. They've practiced them all in practice a million times.

I noticed that set play as well. My thought is I now am going to incorporate that play in the 8u youth team I am co-coaching. I'll see if I can herd the cats! Squirrel!!!!!

I definitely noticed the play and I have not been a big fan of dribbling around at midcourt wasting the shot clock. But that was a beautiful play, the kind that teams used to be able to run all the time before basketball turned into a combination wrestling/football game.

When was that? I played DIII in the late 1970's and it was a shoving/pushing/forearm shiver match down low. And on defense you could hand check; we had two guys that could dictate where the offensive player went with their hand checks.

I don't think it's any harder today (except for not allowing hand checks). It's just now a days the players are all a lot more athletic. Granted, they are a lot more athletic but a lot less versed on the fundamentals.

I agree. Especially toward the end of games when the offense is at your end of the floor. the opposing coach is at the other end of the floor (or a step away from half-court) so why let him coach up his defense?

You might want to think about incorporating one of those mini trampolines into your version to complete the dunk part!

Not to take anything away from Fran.... but that set play was absolutely called by one of the assistant's. While Mike was dribbling, you could see the assistant get up and walk toward Fran suggesting the play. Fran gave a slight nod and then both coaches started yelling the play to the players. That's what good assistants do. And Fran should get credit also for having good assistants and letting them do their job.
