Has a KF coached team EVER made a defensive stop in this scenario?....
Up by a score or less, under 5:00 left, other team has ball. This scenario ALWAYS ends in a loss. No exceptions. Ever. I feel like we lose 2-3 games per year this way. KF is like 0-30 in those scenarios. Only 'exceptions', are if other team scores too early, and we get an occasional rare comeback victory at the end. (2008 PSU, Mich a few yrs back)

You can probably count on 1 hand the times we stopped a team on downs in that situation. We get some turnovers here and there, but almost never a 4 down stop. That's because our defense is designed to occasionally get 3 down stops, but the odds of getting 4 down stops is almost impossible. Syracuse and Missouri are 2 games where we got 4 down stops when we needed them. Good luck finding 3 more.

We can pull it off against teams like Syracuse and UNI. Otherwise we always lose.

It’s been a handful of times against lower level teams in 20 years.

We’ve won a few where we have the ball like the Pitt field goal or 7 got 6 against MSU. But that’s not what you asked. In situations like this where we have to hold our ground we don’t.

Sure doesn’t seem like it.

But I guess I’ve figured it out finally ... at least in my reasoning ... if you’re philosophy is bend-don’t-break it’s difficult to change that to stop-at-all-cost.

That was the story for even KF's most talented team in 2010. I think we lost 4 or 5 games in last min opposing drives. I was at the NW game that year and that final drive with fucking Persa throwing that 20 yd TD completely across his body in the rain while tearing his ACL with a gassed Clayborn chasing him pretty much epitomized that entire soul crushing season.

It's probably happened a little more than we think, but it sure is a rarity.

KF and his record in games that come down to the final possession or two has got to be dismal.

Agreed. Unless the defense is really special. The 2009 team had 8 of 11 starters that at least got a cup of coffee in the NFL.

I know in 2016 it happened twice vs Rutgers and Minnesota. Iowa withstood long final drives to seal the game .

Yeah usually by the end, the defense is gassed because as usual they've had to carry the team.

I remember a pick against Denard Robinson to seal a game.

And, Greenway w/ a tfl to backup a Minny fg that would miss.

You know what's especially interesting is how many years we've had statistically top ranked defenses and still can't win games like this. Its a cultural issue. We're Iowa.
