SEC Film Room

I have Hulu Live now, and as part of that you get the SEC Network. I don’t watch it often, but every week they have a show called SEC Film Room where they sit down with a different head coach and break down plays in a really detailed way and you get a lot of insight into what coaches see in a play, how it was supposed to work, and what went good or bad. They also talk to a few players. This week was Nick Saban and, like him or not, it’s interesting as shit to watch and listen to these guys break film down. It’s obviously not done in the exact same manner that it would be in a room full of P5 players and coaches, but holy cow it’s interesting to watch.

SOMEONE GET THIS GOING ON BTN

@RobHowe , you’re a powerful guy with lots of connections, let’s make it happen.

That’s all.

Totally agree. We can sit and compare conferences, etc, but I've said for a long time now that I wish the BTN was half as good as the SEC network. It's really good and they have a lot of good shows/replays and not as much re-running of lame studio shows, etc.

It's actually a pretty good idea for a 15-20 minute segment every week. It's not like BTN does not have enough "dead time" to kill throughout the week to make it work. Wasn't Howard Griffith from BTN doing some short segments like this a couple years ago? I seem to remember him praising some of Iowa's line play in one of those segments but I'm not sure he is doing this anymore.

Yes he did and no they aren't doing it anymore.

Is it too small of a niche (i.e. people who are really into football Xs and Os)? It does seem like kind of a logical thing to do, but I am probably biased because I would love something like that. Are we in this thread part of a smaller minority than we realize?

Indeed, Griffith DID do that.

Basically, SEC Network is the "good" of what ESPN USED to be.

I would bet that you're right, that there just aren't enough people who really care about the details at that level. I've always loved watching those X's and O's shows...Jaworski used to have one as a countdown to Monday Night Football or something like that many years ago that was good. The All-22 footage that the NFL has now really lends itself to something like that, but I don't know if they do college football.

My amateur skills are limited to what I think a play is and based on that assumption, determining what each player did well and poorly. When you get a coach for the team in question, however, you really get to see the thought behind the play and if it was something that was gameplanned or just a well executed play.

I think Ohio St is on a bye this week and the other day the BIG 10 network still found a way to have half the show about Ohio St. They do the same with Michigan. It's all they show.

I no power or connections but I would like to see that on the BTN in place of some of the talking heads shows. A lot of fluff on BTN, IMO.

The problem with shows like what your suggesting and that NFL matchup show that Ron Jawarski used to have (maybe he still has it I dunno) is that we Xs and O geeks are few and far between. I don't think they get very good ratings at all so there's a reluctance to do them. Yet I'm with Rob. The puff opinion shows that they air at nauseum along with the other off the wall programing is just boring to me. Surely they could do a 30 min show once a week and find a spot for it... I'd love to see either assistant coaches or HCs breaking down tape. I could slurp that up no problem.

This 100%

Was Howard Griffith actually having coaches from the team being reviewed in studio or was he just breaking down plays? The former appears to be what you are looking for based on your above post, the latter is what guys like me (and possibly at least a couple guys in this thread like @CP87 ) can/like to do. The former is a tougher ask because it takes a coach away from the day to day responsibilities. But for the latter, that seemingly wouldn't take much given the number of analysts they should have running around that network looking for something to do.

I'd also in regards to seeing the breakdown of plays like to see what if anything set it up. Like did they run X in the first quarter a couple times to set up Y in the 3rd or 4th? The chess match that the good coaches do often fascinates me. Fat chance of getting them to get that nuanced about it because that'd be giving away what they are doing and how they think. But that'd sure be awesome if they did
