SEC article about B10 expansion

Ouch.

Spewing filth? He hits some points on the head.

  • "can anyone remember the last time the Irish won an important football game?"
  • "the Big Ten's other top gun, Michigan, has become a pathetic joke"

Yeah I call it filth. He basically says that the Big Ten felt like it couldn't compete so it created it's own network and then was trumped by the SEC's tv deal. Absolute filth

How is he wrong? The SEC tv deal did trump the Big 10 deal.

How do you figure? The biggest difference of the two deals is that the Big Ten's deal is not fixed until 2024. While the SEC has a good deal they will continue recieve the same amount of $$ while the Big Ten will add teams and in turn add LOTS of $$$$$$. The 20 mil that each school is getting right now is peanuts compared to what it will be in 10 years.

Wrong. As has been written about a thousand times, Big Ten schools bring in roughly $22 million per year in TV deals compared to $15-$17 million for the SEC. Plus the Big Ten Network is the envy of all conferences right now and the SEC is probably kicking themselves that they didn't pursue a network of their own now.

This is from an Alabama newspaper, so what do you expect? Though many of the facts presented really can't be argued. College football has been dominated by the SEC for most of the past decade. The author is right, Delaney better hit a home run with expansion or be prepared to fall further behind the SEC. Expansion has been nothing but a money grab and unless the teams added are competitive at a national level, tradition/fan interest along with money will dwindle in comparison to the SEC. Though the Big Ten Network looks to be a better deal now, the money generated from the SEC's TV deals really aren't that far behind.

I agree. In my opinion is seems that ESPN offered such a large amount to the SEC so that they wouldn't create their own network and continue to shrink the amount of games ESPN shows. The SEC's deal will not appreciate over time, the BTN will grow and grow substanially if they expand along with collecting ad revenue, which ESPN keeps in their deal with the SEC.

No one can deny the on the field results. The SEC has clearly been superior lately. But he accuses Delany of saying about expansion "One day he says it's a go. The next day he screams no." Where, ever, has Delany said this? Or even implied this? He is taking unfounded rumors by newspapers and bloggers and putting their words in Delany's mouth. That is just flat out bad journalism.

And yes the SEC is better right now, but these things are cyclical. And the SEC never wants to bring up how bad their basketball has been since the Gators won back to back National titles. They had only 2 teams make the tourney in 2009 and the highest seed was like a 7 seed. This past year Kentucky failed miserably in the NCAA tournament. The Big Ten has been far and away the better basketball league, but that doesn't suit this guy's argument so he doesn't bring that up.

Saw this today, didn't see it posted anywhere. An SEC homer spewing filth about the Big Ten expanding because of jealousy of the SEC

Thanks Hawkfan, whether you agree or disagree it makes for a fun read. I hate to be a dark cloud but why is everyone so excited about expanding the big ten to 14 or 16 teams? The ACC tried this and made their basketball and football conference worse. Call me old school or a traditionalist but screw the money, the big ten already makes enough money, why get greedy and ruin a great conference, add one team that makes geographical sense and stop. I would love to watch the Hawks play Nebraska or Missouri every year compared to Rutgers or Texas. Everybody thinks adding Texas will help our recruiting, It sure hasnt helped the Cyclones.

Tecmo, you make some good points. As you said, slamming Delaney for comments he has never made is flat out bad journalism. There is also no doubt the author slanted the facts in the SEC's favor a bit. Since the Gator's back to back run, they haven't exactly set the world on fire in basketball. Though I doubt Florida will be down for long and Tennessee and UK are on par with any Big Ten team right now.

I'm really hoping the SEC's success and Big Ten's lack of it proves to be cyclical in the coming years. Top to bottom I feel the Big Ten is very strong in football in basketball, but until the Big Ten bounces back with some football and basketball championships of their own, national perception of our favorite conference will continue to be down.

Why do most expansion talks revolve around football strength, and football revenues? True those are big factors but only a fraction of the puzzle. And hell, as far as I can tell the B10 is behind the SEC right now, but not as far as a lot would lead you to believe.

You've got to remember that this guy comes from a region where sex between siblings is expected, not derided. And he's probably still ticked off about that War of Northern Aggression situation way back in the day.

And don't forget the ultimate SEC truism...If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'.

That is all.

That's hilarious. The great thing is, since we're proud members of the Big Ten since 1899, we can sit back and smile as the rest of the country ******* and moans. Once again, the Big Ten leads, and others react. I have one thing to say to the sad, bitchy author of that piece: Awwwwwww...... :(

I believe it's If'n ya'll ain't cheatin', ya'll ain't tryin'.

It's impressive that they can work an apostrophe into every word...
