Season is over for Edwardsville's Coe

That's too bad for th e young man. Hopefully his career can continue at Iowa. Is it true that in the whole season he only had like 560 yards. I find that odd. However the article didn't even mention Iowa as recruiting him, so who knows what they actually know.

I heard he had a concussion. Obviously the subject is getting a lot of attention lately - and deservedly so.

He could be a great addition for some team, his earlier You Tube videos were awesome. However, if that were my kid who was knocked out, motionless on the ground, in need of a stretcher and an ambulance ride to the hospital, I would have to say, son, your playing days are over. Football is great but its not worth risking a permanent head injury for. The results of that are devastating to a person and their family. I wish him the best in whatever course he pursues.

If your kid is a great athlete and that is what they love to do I don't know if you would be able to say, sorry I don't think you're playing again. If my dad tried to tell me that about baseball cause I got hit in the head by a pitch (happened) I would've been ****** (and I wasn't a D-1 recruit with MLB aspirations as I'm sure Coe is about the NFL). I know it's risky but how could you tell your kid that?

^ You man up and be a parent. Teenagers don't have great ability to consider their lives in the long run. It's up to parents to help them navigate through (away from) stupid and potientally harmful decisions.

You'd tell your kid to give up his dream cause of an injury. That's part of the risk of the game. You can get hit by a bus walking down the street. You can be as good/careful of a driver as anyone and still get hit by someone else. You can't protect your kids from everything and I don't see how you can tell a kid "you're done". I got a concussion in my dorm room wrestling, my parents didn't say you can't live in that dorm anymore.

I think that being protective is important, but as parents you cant' make all of your kids' decisions for them. Especially when they are adults.

Football can be dangerous, so based on your line of reasoning, shouldn't ALL parents pull their kids out of football? After all, ALL kids run the risk of getting a concussion playing the game.

How about you have done enough to get a scholarship already. Let's lack things up for now until you can get to the level where they have better equipment and an actual training/medical staff?

Yes, his stats this year were a far cry from his junior season. He was dinged up a ton with injuries though. Before this one he had an injury to his leg (knee or ankle?).

But as to the discussion about telling the kid he can't play anymore, that's just crazy. He had one concussion. I played with a kid in HS named Chuck who was a GREAT linebacker freshman and sophomore year. We both played varsity as sophomores but he was actually our starting MLB while I mostly rode the bench and came in during garbage time at LT. He had somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 concussions in 2 years, and eventually had to shut it down. Only 1 concussion was due to football, the other 4 came from basketball (he had a propensity to dive for loose balls and often smacked his head on the ground). In any event, after his first 3 concussions his doctor told him it would be ok to keep playing. After his 4th they warned against it and told him he was likely to get another one very easily. After his 5th they told him he couldn't play anymore.

I don't care how much you worry about your son, you don't tell someone they have to give up on their dreams after one concussion.
