Season Grade

OK Jon did his. What say you? Overall grade not by unit. And some rationale.
I'll go with C-. Slightly below average, did not beat any team of note, lost to all teams of note.

C
3-3 in a soft division and 5-4 overall on a weak B1G schedule is nothing to write home about but it wasn't a total bottom-out failure either.

They did win 3 of 4 trophy games so at least there are some bragging rights over some nearby fans that aren't pulling for Wisconsin. Those games are starting to look a lot harder going forward though.

Weak C.
KF is a slightly better than .500 coach in the BIG. And that is what Iowa delivered again this year.

Come on folks. A solid B overall. Defeated 3 bowl teams (Iowa State; N. Illinois; Minnesota). Currently ranked 11th by Sagarin and 25th by Massey. Captured 3 of 4 trophy games, including a clutch late drive to beat a Nebraska team that was a heck of a lot better than its record at the end of the year. Soundly defeated a Maryland team that beat Texas and really should have beaten Ohio State at the end of the year (QB overthrew a wide open receiver on a 2 point conversion try for the win on the last play of the game).

Offensive coaching: C. Convert on first and goal against Penn State and defeat Northwestern (we had a 10-7 lead in the 4th) and we would have been Division champions.

Final grade should not be issued until after the bowl game. Mississippi State will be the strongest team we face all year. Stanley needs to get a lot better, and has that opportunity against Miss. St.

I'll go B- if we win bowl game, C- if we lose it.

If OP is looking for a grade right now I will give a C+. There were disappointments, wins left on the table, and enough talent to do better.

Again, 9-4 will feel better than 8-5.

C -. I expected 9-3 with a loss to wisc and penn st, plus your yearly Stumble on a team we should beat. So 8-4 is slightly below expectations.

In college Cs get degrees. In college football Cs get you bonuses.

I'd say...it depends.....

Is 8-4 with an Outback bowl good? Sure its good. I'm sure 85% of college programs would take that result in a heartbeat. So in the world of College Football, they probably earned a B or B+.

However if you compare Iowa to their expectations....Iowa lost all 3 games in which they were underdogs and lost a home game in which they were 10.5 point favorites. That in itself means they didn't live up to expectations. So that's like a C-

I personally give them a D+. If you go back and look at all 4 losses, Iowa was in each and every game until they made stupid and preventable mistakes (Stanley late INT vs Wisconsin, Stanley INT at goal line vs Penn State, 2 late RB fumbles vs Northwestern, bad pass defense/terrible 2 point conversion attempts vs Purdue). They also nearly let Nebraska beat them when they were up by 15. You could easily make an argument that this year had 12-0 potential. After seeing what Wisconsin did, this should have been AT LEAST an Indianapolis year. Iowa failed all around in those areas.

I would like to give them at least a B- for somewhere above avg but I cant.

To get an A grade they would have to beat every team they should and that is definitely a NO as it would have resulted in at least 10-2 or better.

To get a B they would have to be above avg and really it has been documented on this board how the hawks are only avg at 8-4 so no B grade as they would have to be 9-3.

They were AVG this year a C to C- and the minus part is due to losing the way they did, just many many self inflicted coaching and physical and mental mistakes, many mental mistakes.

But I hope they correct them for next year and the bowl game

C-
Defensive line is what brought them up to a C- otherwise it would have been a D for lousy play calling, keeping your best players on the bench, not pulling the QB when he was stinking up the game. Playing conservative with the lead, losing leads, can’t get plays to the huddle quick enough.

Seem familiar? I think I wrote the same review the last 9 out of 10 seasons
