I have used a formula of winning % plus or minus strength of schedule rating. I used this to generate a top 25 rating based on those stats. The source for the strength of schedule rating and win% is Iowa Hawkeyes Index | College Football at Sports-Reference.com Note: Strength of schedule rating was only available for 1899 and after so I was unable to include any team prior to that otherwise the 1896 team would probably be in.

The team did have a good offensive with all American Clyde Williams at quarterback, however it was more known for it's rock solid 7-4 defense that did not give up a touchdown all season.

^^I love the energy you bring hawknick^^^ but damn you must not have a job and have way too much time on your hands....:)

The last conference championship for the cyclowns was 1912, almost as long! They remind me a lot of the Cubs.

The 2013 team is currently at number 36 with a rating of 69.05 (66.7% + 2.35 sos). There is still a chance that they can make the top 25 if they win a bowl game against a quality team. Just ahead of them now is 2008 at 69.77 and 1901 at 69.25. Lets go hawks be one of the best ever!

Interesting website. Another noted stat from that website, and the reason Iowa is always on the radar of bowl games.:

Insight Bowl - it's been around for 24 years - Iowa's 2 appearances are the highest in game attendance

Outback Bowl - it's been around for 27 years - Iowa has the 3rd and 5th highest spot in game attendance.

Alamo Bowl - it's been around for 20 years - Iowa has the 2nd and 6th highest spot in game attendance (the 2 under Hayden are farther down the list)

Rose Bowl - it's always a sellout, or nearly so.

Orange Bowl - it's changed venues, so difficult to assess, although Iowa represented itself well there.

Cap One Bowl - top 5 in attendance.

Hawk fans travel well. It's no hype.

Take this stat FWIW - just was curious myself & did the math, so I thought I would share it.

Counting this season, KF has coached 12% of the total number of Iowa football seasons but has accounted for 16% of the 25 best Iowa football seasons of all time.

I have the same numbers, so yes he is 4% above average on this.

Top 25s:

Ferentz 4
Fry 6
Evy 4
Anderson 1
Ingwersen 1
Jones 6
Chalmers 1
Knipe 3

If 1896 could be included it would probably drop Fry to 5, and give A.E. Bull 1

This year Iowa should have an even better chance to jump ahead of at least the 1986 team. I'd expect a strength of schedule rating of about 1.8 so winning 75% or more of the games should do it. I predict too that they will win more than that.

I should not have read this thread. I have seen 50% of the teams that appear on this list. Geez.

Right, the last 2 coaches account for 46% of the teams.

I don't care about what happened prior to Howard Jones. The Mount Rushmore of Iowa football is Jones, Evy, Hayden and Captain Kirk, in no particular order.

We have a good coach in Ferentz and I hope the majority of the Iowa fans appreciate this fact.....I'll take seasons like 2013 every year.

It would have to have 5 faces to include Dr. Knipe. What he did for this program can not be understated. He took the team from from having an outright players revolt to having two of the most dominant teams in college football history. He was also a program builder ahead of his time. His efforts helped lead to the construction of the old armory (later the library annex not the armory that was attached to the fieldhouse) and the first stadium seating at Iowa Field. The football program had many good years following his term as coach until the problems with the administration in the late 20s.
