Schwartz: Kirk Ferentz’s Contract Gets Better With Each Passing Month

The problem for me has always been that the incentives start kicking in for 7 or 8 wins.

So basically, the expectation / standard Barta set was "We're paying you a top coaches salary, and all we expect in return is to win half your games. Win any more than that, and you get a bonus."

Given the mediocre state of the B1G West (that is still what it's called, right?) and the non-con schedule, 9 or 10 wins should be the "you've exceeded expectations" bar if you're being paid like a top-10 / 20 coach.
7WINS=GROSS To Max! Incentive????....

Agree. It's not worthy of an incentive clause. Iowa went 4-5 in the Big Ten. but managed 8 wins. Decent season - but incentive-worthy? I'm not critical of Ferentz for this, he's getting what he asked for - who would turn that down, at least I wouldn't. Maybe it's industry standard to provide these types of bonuses for low threshold performances so Iowa has to play the game with everyone else, I don't know.

That's the win total for a bowl I guess. I presume the incentive lines up with getting to any bowl. If I'm AD, I'm at least setting the bar at 9 wins and a top bowl. 2nd incentive would be in the final 4.

Top tier bowl, first level. Face it a 50/50 season gets you a bowl most of the time. The top tier ones are when you start to know that you are playing ball.
Win the west. Second level.
Win the B10. Third level.
Final four and you have pretty much punched your own ticket.

The day Iowa--with KF--makes the playoff is the day he cements his "legacy" at Iowa. Like it or not, that will be "Teams-Full-of-4&5-stars, plus Iowa". In terms of "January"/"BCS"-level bowls that Iowa has appeared in during the JHF/KF Eras, how many could you say Iowa was the superior team "star"-wise? Good as the teams were with Chuck Long, pretty much every bowl he played in was against a team with superior recruiting "numbers". Ditto KF. I think one MIGHT argue that we were on a par with Ga Tech. Despite the fact, of course, that we were all told the Hawks would "never" stop their triple-option attack.

Great season = Raise/Extension

Rebuilding year = Raise/Extension

Down year = Raise/Extension

"Rumors" of coach leaving = Let us know what you want

They aren't really contracts, in a strict sense of the word, are they?

We all know where Norm Parker shoved that triple option.

Adrian Clayborn was a one man wrecking crew.

Getting up fourteen was huge in that game. The triple option is not a good come from behind offense.

Did we miss playing against Calvin Johnson by one year...or two?

That was the one year that we may have gone down a weight class for our bowl game. There is no way we lose two BIG games with a healthy Stanzi. He had the "it" factor going that year despite all his picks. Usually we move up a weight class for our bowl. Because we "travel so well" I guess.

Chuck Long's 1984 Freedom Bowl feast goes down as one of my all time favorite Hawkeye moments, especially after all the misfortune and frustration at the end of that regular season. It took him a few series to get his rhythm going. Once he did I don't think I've ever seen a college quarterback get on a hotter streak.

I remember living in Cedar Rapids at the time and listening to the play by play on WMT. That was a beat-down for the ages.

GT didn't have Calvin Johnson at time, but you might be thinking of another guy ( can't think of his name) who was highly drafted and had a nice NFL career with the broncos. Iowa held him in check in that game. Always kills me when people downplay Iowa's win in that game saying GT's offense was one dimensional when its called the triple option and they had a first round draft pick at receiver.

I knew Calvin didn't play on that GT team. I just don't remember how many years removed he was, nor do I remember the name of the other receiver. I remember what Clayborn did in the first half, though.

Thanks for the correction. My memory really is getting bad.

Me too. :)

Understood. Just had a minor knee procedure done on the fourth and have another nine days of PT before I meet with Ortho on the 20th. It explains why I've been on these boards so much and why the pain pills have been messing with my short term memory. I'm missing the heart of 5/10 k running season and had to put the Madison Crazy Legs race on hold for another year and that's what sucks
the most.

Anyone know if they still do the River Run in Iowa City during Riverfest, or if they still have Riverfest? Ran it three times, learned that running it with a hangover is not fun.
