Schwartz: 10 Sentences

I have watched Iowa football through many coaches, starting with Evy. I have seen all of them win, or lose, big games. Except for Frank Lauterbur, who couldn't beat off. I think KF is a very fine football coach, who treats his players well, sometimes frustrates me with his conservative approach, but like about every fan, I find Iowa football, and basketball, for that matter, alternately absolutely amazingly entertaining and at times amazingly frustrating. In short, I am unable, even after playing in high school and small college, and coaching at small schools and at Kennedy HS in CR, and being a qualified student of the game, to identify specific attributes among coaches to explain their win/loss records, let alone close victories vs close losses. I respect your views, just can't get in touch with your conclusions

Not content until we win the West and get back into the championship game! Watched the MSU/Iowa game back in the day with my son and we were broken hearted. Two teams that played their guts out and Iowa went to the Rose bowl with nothing left. Don't blame them. Was a great moment.

Rose Bowl? There was a mismatch on D along with playing with an injury. That was the high tide of KF not adjusting to an opponent .....one player.

The best coaches get their players ready to play when they feel that they have "nothing left." It is called leadership. Kirk tends to play the "default tapes" during his in game coaching and is easy to defend, most often. This is especially true in the big games and in those games where Iowa doesn't dominate player to player as they do in many of their games. Kirk's big game coaching results are quite poor, and they are similar.

Statistical breakdowns I'd like to see for the Ferentz era.
Vs. Northwestern, Wisconsin, Purdue, Penn State, MSU

#1 Wins vs. Loses.

#2 First half leads vs. behind at the end of the half. Is it higher or lower than the Win/Loss ratios.

#3 First half leads lost in the second half
First half leads retained in the second half
First half deficits overcome in the second half
First half deficits that are lost

My perception is Kirk does rather well at being in games. He also does a decent job of establishing first half leads. Not sure on overcoming first half deficits. Kirk blows a disproportionate number of first half leads. At least that is my perception.

My perception could be wrong. Maybe second tier teams tend to fade in the second half. I still think Kirkball tightens up when they go into the second half with a lead. He'll throw in more wrinkles and trick plays than he used to, but doesn't change the complexion of things. His teams still play tight with a second half lead.
