Scale of 1 to 10, rate Fran's first season

Based upon your expectations for this season, how would you rate the progress of the team under the first season of Frannie Mac? One would be performing well under what you expected, while 10 is exceeding your wildest imagination. Show your work.

10. You can't argue that this team overachieved expectations....especially with the loss of Payne early in the season and the way they were playing towards to end of the year.

They finished with the record I expected them to finish with. However the style of play and team attitude exceeded my expectations. I'm very optimistic for the future, and that's the first time I've said that about Iowa basketball in a long time.

I thought the team performed about what I expected, perhaps a bit better. Pluses: the play of Basabe and Cartwright; passion on the bench; players smiling, having fun; up-tempo style of play; the obvious growth of Brommer and Archie; willingness to change the line-up or make a change when something isn't working. Minuses: we missed out on some players (not even counting Paige -- he was long gone before Fran arrived); saw no growth and perhaps some regression in Gatens and May; I'm honestly not convinced that the commits we have coming next year will contribute that much to the cause.

For me, a big question mark on how I would evaluate the first year is what we do with the two remaining scholarships and the class that Fran brings in next year. Those relationships/connections have been underway for the past year and will continue into coming months.

Competitivness 10
But overall I'd say 6 or 7. There were a few wins that could have been had and the begining of the season didnt start off too hot. Next year's team should be close to .500, at least those are my expectations.

Probably about an 8. We did still lose 20 games. However I am extremely optimistic about the future.

That's a tough thing to rate:

If you rate the record its got to be a 3 at best.

If you rate the style of play its a 9

If you rate the play its a 4, maybe a 5.

If you rate the general interest its a 10

The season met my expectations (7) and provided a ton of hope (9) for the future. I didn't like the record (3) and you could tell that the talent just isn't good enough (4 or 5) to compete on a regular basis. The two Fran recruits (10) were excellent and if we could get more of them it shouldn't take long to get back to where we once were.

The development (8) of certain players was exciting to watch. Guys like Brommer (7), Archie (8 at times and 2 at times) and Cole (9) improved dramatically over last year. Guys like Gatens (4) and May (1) regressed so that is discouraging.

The Purdue game (10) was the high point of the season. It showed me that if this season were to be played all over again, our record would be SIGNIFICANTLY better with the same players. I would almost go as far as saying we could have gone undefeated in the OOC schedule.

The low point was game #1 under Fran (1). Losing to So Dak State should never happen.

8... the wins weren't there but the team continually improved and competed with some very high level teams and even knocked one off. Fran has a lot of people excited because he's batting 1.000 when it comes to recruiting, 2-2.

8 Yes, the record looked pretty bad. The excitement was way up from the last couple of years, and we where competitive with everyone, which we have not been recently.

10. You can't argue that this team overachieved expectations....

So your expectations were worse than a 20 loss season?! You expected losses against Long Beach State and South Dakota State?

Might as well expect a 5 win season every year so you will never be disappointed!

He didn't have much to work with this season, that is for sure. As far as his PR, marketing and overall personality, I give him a 10. No BS like we heard from Lickliter about needing an eternity to turn things around coupled with 0 expectations.

Coaching style and game management...again, not much to work with in the cupboard, but would say 8. Our defense was really, really bad at times and I am still not convinced this team can recognize hot shooters. Going to Gatens over and over again in late game situations with 0 results drove me nuts, but not many other options.

Recruiting...as others have stated, the jury is out. Is Ogelsby Gatens II or can he develop into a Diebler type player? Is White capable of helping out down low and on the perimeter? How hard will the freshman work in the offseason? Will we get Cezar or another "next level" PG and hopefully a big of slasher? Does Archie graduate and leave us one more roster spot?

Certainly a huge fan of McCaffrey after year one.

You must be another liberal writer for the DSM register......taking my quote out of context.....well done:rolleyes:

I call it a 7. Record is right where I expected. More B10 wins actually, though probably less OOC. That makes it a 5. The bump to 7 comes from what looks like clear progress and ability to play with anyone in the conference (beat PU, Wisky to OT, etc.).

I am going with 6.5.

Our record is exactly where I expected it. We played some good teams tough, but we were almost non-existant outside of CHA. I like the players Fran has brought in so far, but Gatens and May have not developed under Frannie Mac as expected.

However, I am optimistic; The players seem to love to play for McC, we have a homecourt advantage again, and if our younger players like Marble and Basabe develop over the summer, we will have a team ready to finally jump to the middle of the pack in the B1G.

I just don't get how you can give this team a 6 or 7....based on expectations. If you were basing the rating on how competitive they are in the B10...okay, fine. But, I expected a year like last season under Lickliter. Was it better, absolutely! This season the team was FAR more interesting to watch, competitive in most games. Did they let a few slip away, yes, but it could have been A LOT worse.

Coach did good his first year. The players he recruited were the two best players on the team at the end of year. We saw growth in a lot of players as the season progressed which we haven't seen since Mr. Davis.

People are actually starting to care about basketball again which makes an Iowa winter a hell of a lot more tolerable.

I'm sure you'll be thrilled as well if Iowa only wins 5 games a year. Makes Hoiberg's job easier.

This. I'd been to just a couple games in Carver where we had any semblance of a home-court advantage before this season. And this year it was there more often than not. Didn't carry us to a lot of wins (obviously), but this team really wasn't THAT far away.

I give it an 8 overall. Home-court is on the rebound, the style was fun to watch, the team competed from start to finish, and the development from SDSU to yesterday was just astounding.

I'd give it an 8. There were some things I saw that I was somewhat disappointed in. But, I figured they'd win 12-15 games. Considering I also didn't figure Cully missing pretty much the whole season, Gatens being hurt most of the OOC and May being hurt a big chunk of the B1G season, they are actually about right were I thought they'd be, maybe even somewhat ahead.

Things are also looking up. The conference shouldn't be quite as daunting next year, they should have everyone back (which leads to consistency and improvement) and depending on the two final recruits for the year, he could have a pretty good class coming in.
